Not sure if anyone else has this problem, but at college we use iMac's for logging and capturing videos off the college cameras which is great because it works with Macs and all that (it exports to .MOV files) but the second I try and use these .MOV files on my pc I can't because I dont have the "Codec" (I have quicktime installed) any it's really annoying me because I have to do a lot of editing and I can't do any of it at home!
So I guess my question is.. is there any way to fix this problem? even when I just open the files in quicktime to watch them I only get Audio!

P.S. I can use .MOV files created on my PC (like exported files from After Effects), We use FCP7 at college to log and capture videos if that makes any difference..

A MOV file is simply a container for your video file.
Which software do you use on the iMac for exporting not the MOV container? Are you able to change settings etc? If so, try exporting in the h264 format (it will still create a MOV file) which should be playable, and editable, on your PC (depending upon the editing software you use on your PC).

I'm using FCP7 and using the Log and Capture feature (we use Sony HDV-1000E cameras) because we record onto MiniDV tapes. It just exports all the files to .MOV into the "Capture Scratch" file in the project file.. and if I use an external file converter to make these files into a different format I lose a lot of quality which doesn't look good at all :/

Try changing the file type to mp4 whilst it's still on your Mac, maybe that'll work?

Could you try exporting it once its all in FCP7, at the highest quality h264 MOV? Shouldn't lose quality this way.
Sorry I haven't used FCP7 before so stabbing in the dark here!

I might try this, it does seem a little long winded if it's what I think you mean, by putting each video file into the project timeline then exporting?
But if the way Frankie said doesn't work I guess that's what I will have to do :/

Man I really need to invest in getting either FCP7 or Adobe Premiere CS6 on my iMac at home :L

you mean just changing the file extension? because I have no idea how to change the default export from .MOV to anything else.

Yeah, on your mac hit enter like you would to rename, change it to mp4. It may not work, but I've done things like this before and it's made a 'bad' file a 'good' one :)

ahh okay! I shall try this tomorrow.. so if you see another thread tomorrow saying help needed.. it's me just failing like I normally do :')

can you close this thread or something now? :)

Another option is upload the file to Youtube and then download it at home. Or take the file upload it at home to youtube and then download it to your computer as an mp4. I have not had this issue. I have FCP 7...

Oh try this when you go to export the file don't export it as a Quicktime use the conversion that is part of FCP7 I am pretty sure you have multiple options for what format you want it exported as.
