My VidCon 2014 Experience

MotokiMaxted

what is this
Hey, haven't really posted in awhile and I might be a bit late on this topic but I wanted to share with you guys my VidCon experience. I did a quick search and as far as I could tell, not that much was really discussed in detail so here I am. When I joined this forum I was really curious about a lot of YouTube culture and gatherings so I figured ya'll might be interested.

I daily vlogged the convention and even the day before with the preparty. First offical day is in my signature. Mods, if that counts as promotion, feel free to remove.

Things not included in the videos

  • From what my friends told me, this year was the worst vidcon ever do to the uptight security and mosh pits of girls.
  • Do to the largest crowd ever, big YouTubers were forced to stay inside their hotel rooms and never come out unless escorted by security.
  • Fan girls literally screamed and ran to famous youtubers amassing huge crowds.
  • I didn't visit any panels due to the large lines for all the ones I would have attended. A lot of people waited for hours.
  • I was extremely surprised at how many viewers recognized me and asked for pictures. Coolest thing ever.
  • Not many people will take you seriously as a creator unless you have a "special guest" pass (instead of "community pass")
  • A lot of top Viners attended the convention which gave me conflicted feelings at first but even the ones with millions of followers that I spoke with were very nice so no problems.
  • A majority of the fan girls at the convention were there for Tyler Oakley, Jenna Marbles, the British lot, and O2L.
  • If you're a guy and dress fashionably, girls will think you're a youtuber and not a fan.
  • The best time to hang out with youtubers is past midnight when fan girls are sleeping
  • Getting into exclusive parties is the coolest experience of your life
  • Had a brief chat with @WrecklessEating at the CDS party.
  • Most YouTubers I met were very nice.
  • Having a good relationship with a top network who does a lot at VidCon is very beneficial in getting to parties, networking, meetups, collabs, etc.
  • Swoozie was the most dedicated one there, doing a meetup for over 13 hours straight. Still even talked to me afterwards and told me he slept for like 15 hours afterwards from exhaustion. Dude wasn't even invited, paid for everything himself.
  • Twitter follow exchanges and cell number exchanges happen way more than business cards exchanges.
If you have any questions about it, or who I met, anything, feel free to reply and ask me.

I stopped reading after you said 'That channel isn't making revenue yet so I'm not really gaining anything'
What I should have said is that I have monetization disabled, I'm not signed to a network, and it's my second channel so I don't care about money or views... Any better? Kinda confused as to what you're getting at..

Nice meeting you at The Collective party. That was one of the best events related to Vidcon-and the most laid back since it wasn't close enough to the convention center to be mobbed by fans.

Did you have any fangirl issues at your hotel? Last year I was at the Hilton next door and it was horrible. Fangirls were stalking any room where they thought their idols were staying. They also went floor to floor yelling people's name and knocking on random doors in hopes of finding someone famous. There was also a 15-20 minute line just to get into the elevator and a big crowd on each floor that made it difficult to get out of any elevator. I decided to stay much further away this year and it was totally worth the peace and quiet.

i was looking at your channel and its pretty good! how long have you been doing youtube on your main channel

I've never attended any of these gatherings mainly because i live far far away hahah
What i have seen from Benjamins project "Becoming Youtube" that even Summer in the City becomes larger and larger every year and i'm just waiting for the climax man!
I feel bad for organizers since this is becoming so damn huge that i don't wanna change roles here^^
Aaaaaaand props to Swoozie, that guy is a beast xD

For sure man, that night was insane. Loved every second of the party.

I ended up staying a little less than a mile away because of prices and I'm glad I did. I know that for the Hilton this year, once the convention officially started, no one was allowed in the main lobby unless you were a special guest or actually had a room. My friend who was special guest couldn't even get me in. There was also a security guard on every floor that would monitor people. Very good for top youtubers.

Not a single person recognized me even though I have a high-ranking channel LOL
Not my demographic =)

I agree with most of your perceptions. I'm looking for more of an informational experience rather than a fan/creator experience. That being said, it was nice to see YouTubers taking pictures with orderly fans.
