My Let's Playing Experience

A while ago (when I hit 40 subs) I started a Let's Play series of Dark Souls II...I've never thought let's plays were that original, but this proved it. Now, looking at my analytics, I noticed my audience retention for that series was incredibly low, like 4%. I calculated it, and 4% is almost exactly "Heyyo everyone, I'm just your friendly neighborhood wonderwonderwonderman here with some Dark Souls II."

What I learned: People don't want to watch a random 'Tuber play a random game. So no more Let's Plays for me. :P

Well, starting to watch a series is kind of a commitment. So new people would prefer to watch a one-shot video to see your style, the viewers of a long series will mostly be limited to your established fan base. Who already tested your style, and decided that you pass and worth to watch.

That's a good point. So you're saying that if I did a one-episode let's play it might get more views?

I'm actually theorycrafting here, not speaking from experience but I would say so. And as a plus, a short game would have "denser" content, with something going on almost all the time.

Well, I wouldn't give up completely on let's plays. The thing is even though dark souls II lets plays were popular a while back, they're not as exciting now. So it's not a matter of the let's play, it's more about the game. Try for a new title that has come out just a few weeks ago, or better yet, wait for a new game to come out. Another thing is, dark souls is more (not totally because it IS popular) of a niche audience, with fewer, more hardcore players. But you aren't going to catch the attention of your typical casual gamer. Same thing with rpg's in general, they're just a little slow paced to get an audience excited by let's plays. Guides for rpgs? Good. Character builds? Yeah! Let's plays...ehhhh....

So if that was too many words, I'm basically saying try to pick a more action packed game for let's plays :)
Hope that helps!

Yeah, that does help a lot. I did find that short highlights were more popular, however. Maybe it's just my specific audience.

I also went through the same thing, I was doing LP's but over time, people just didn't watch them so I tried one shot videos but those didn't span out as well as I'd hope , so now I just restarted my channel for anime related videos instead of video games.

Yeah, sometimes branching out into different areas can be really good. I'm thinking I might start to do some spoken word now.
