Live Commentary vs Post Commentary?

Hey guys,

I'm wondering what everyone's thought is on commentary. Live versus post editing.

Personally. I've almost always solely used live on my videos where I review indie games because I think the reactions are awesome, but I've done post commentary before and enjoyed commentating in a relaxed state, explaining all the key details as they appear in my video.

Which is better? Has anyone looked at analytics between the two?

Live. Always prefer live. Its the reactions, the way you talk yourself through what you are doing, it really draws the viewer in. I don't like watching post-commentary because..well...the person who made the video already knows what happens. Sort of takes the fun out of it...

Post generally. It is so much harder to make live commentary good. As one person I read said it, is a stand-up comedian funnier if they go up unprepared and just wing it?

Live is really only good if you are specifically doing a type of video like Rage Quit.

Each have their own strong points. Live commentary as people said have the advantage of being raw unscripted reactions that tend to provide more emotional responses and in certain situations connect better with an audience compared to post commentary. You also have the befit of brief planning since everything is unscripted and you can give true in the moment analysis of something.

Post commentary also has its strengths while it does lack the raw emotions and reactions of a live commentary post commentary is much more structured and is ideal for in depth reviews since you can critically analyse something rather than just going by face value. It also gives you more control as its much easier to structure a commentary on a topic or even when you have time to properly prepare. While a live game review is cool, they tend to rarely be as informative as they could be and as such the viewer may miss out on something because at the time you simply didn't think of it to caught up in what was going on in present moment.

Neither is better than another rather it depends on what you like to do, a lets play should be live as to give the audience and the player a much more enjoyable experience, but a review in my opinion should be done in post to allow the review to take whatever they are reviewing as a whole and judge it better. A mix of the two can be good. Just my opinion of course :D

If you want to go through Let's Play boot camp, go to . I've gone there and almost became a qualified LPer and able to post my own LPs on their forum. I just decided to go a different route with my channel.

Well on my channel my main feature is actually previewing/reviewing indie titles, greenlight, early access, new release, kickstarter, etc. That's why I'm saying more of the post editing.

If you're good enough you can post commentate and no one will know it wasn't live. I think I'm pretty good at post commentary and making it seem live but I've only done it once as I'm not really a gamer:
But what do I know...like I said, I'm not much of a gamer at all. I've actually quit gaming temporarily...haven't played anything in 3 months. Good luck whatever you decide.

I prefer live commentary because I only make Let's Plays videos. But I can see why post-commentary can be good, for example when you make a review of a game or just want to talk about something with some gameplay in the background.
