Live-com versus Post-com?

For those of you who do both styles of commentary, do you feel one is better or advantageous than the other?

I'm beginning to think that my live gaming commentaries (vlogish) are not very professional... I feel like I sound very sporadic and my game plays are not very good (skill-wise) because I am concentrating on several different things at the same time. I have been a bit hesitant to do post-commentaries but this has been something I was thinking of for a while now.

The thing with post commentaries that make me hesitant to do it is that I feel like I am taking away the engaging experience of the game but recently I have been very concerned with the way I impress my channel to viewers. I don't want to be seen as someone who doesn't put effort into my videos (because I do) and the live commentaries/vlogs are just not doing me justice.

Since I play Minecraft and Black Ops2 (I have an LP and gaming-themes vlog coming up) I think I am going to change things up for my next video! Minecraft is easier to play as long as I am not exploring caves, and Black Ops 2 is very mind-involving. So my plan is to mix things up and make Minecraft live-com and Black Ops 2 post-com. I'm confident that this will be better and allow me to experience both styles to see which works best for me.

You've inspired me to get into commentary, I just need some topics. But what better way to get ideas than asking an amazing and friendly community like yttalk?!
Off to make a thread I go! :D

Great question! On my channel I do a good mix of live commentary and post-commentary! I find the post-commentary to be much more enjoyable as you can focus on your content much more. However, for people who just NEED more content from YOU, live coms are an excellent fix! I try and balance out Post and Live so I can satisfy both the die-hard fans and the fans who want my BEST content! Hope this helped!

I see. That was helpful, thanks. I'm hoping my next video will be better. I really think you have to match the the right style of commentary with the right video. A live-com on a LP-style gaming video seems a better fit, as with a post-comm for a vlog-style gaming video . It's hard for me because I like to mix the two together, but perhaps I have to stop doing that if I wish to increase the quality of my video production.

Awesome! Absolutely agree with the matching, if its a cool play you make in a game, a lot of the time the live commentary will make it truly a hit. Or say you're playing a horror game, post commentary on that would be a little anti-climatic!
On the other hand post-commentary is better for polished guides. I've seen "live guides" before and I think they're better to supplement an already pre-packaged content with a live example, not as a standalone.

As you say, post-com with black ops and live-com with minecraft seems like a great idea. If you ever plan on going for a Playthrough of a game I would suggest live commentary, it helps the viewer connect more with you. Unless you make a informative walkthrough, then it is better to go for post commentary :P...god I'm starting to get confused with my own words, hope it makes sense lol

Nope, that sounds logical. I think I sound pretty engaging so hopefully the post-coms will work out well for me.

The others have covered the main points. Sometime it's hard to say what would be better. For example, I've seen some gamers who do both Live- and Post-commentary with both being entertaining. Perhaps live commentaries get easier once you're better at improvising and sounding natural while doing it. Overall, the live ones are better for connecting with the viewers and genuine reactions to the game. Post is good for informative or... third-person commentator commentating (like, ESPN or MLG or whatever).

Also, I'd say Post is better if you're...um..."machinimating" I guess. In other words, I've seen some people who record normal gameplay but edit and voice over it later to achieve a comedic final product. Sometimes it's looked down upon for not being "genuine," and it's not quite "commentary," but the creative aspect of it still merits some praise in my opinion.

I just started my youtube channel and I feel like live commentaries are good for me to get in to the commentary "feel", if you know what I mean. When you want to talk about a specific topic, post commentaries are better, I think :)

Yeah, I've always felt that post-commentary takes away the engaging factor from the the commentary itself, but I guess it depends on how you do it. It would be great if I sounded like pro-ESPN, like your commentary style, haha but I feel like I'm kind of all over the place sometimes. I don't want to get too fancy with the editing but I'll be posting up a new video soon with post-com and I'll see how it is received.

Thanks! I plan to try this out soon.
