Lighting? What's a cheap method?

What's a cheap method to make a video look well lit, I don't want it dark. What's the best items from around the house or cheap objects from local DIY stores.

Any help would be lovely!

The light bulb

An incandescent light bulb, incandescent lamp or incandescent light globe is an electric light which produces light with a filament wire heated to a high temperature by an electric current passing through it, until it glows (see Incandescence). The hot filament is protected from oxidation with a glass bulb that is filled with inert gas (or evacuated). In a halogen lamp, filament evaporation is prevented by a chemical process that redeposits metal vapor onto the filament, extending its life. The light bulb is supplied with electrical current by feed-through terminals or wires embedded in the glass. Most bulbs are used in a socket which provides mechanical support and electrical connections.

Incandescent bulbs are manufactured in a wide range of sizes, light output, and voltage ratings, from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts. They require no external regulating equipment, have low manufacturing costs, and work equally well on either alternating current or direct current. As a result, the incandescent lamp is widely used in household and commercial lighting, for portable lighting such as table lamps, car headlamps, and flashlights, and for decorative and advertising lighting.

Incandescent bulbs are less efficient than several other modern types of light bulbs; most incandescent bulbs convert less than 5% of the energy they use into visible light (with the remaining energy being converted into heat). Some applications of the incandescent bulb deliberately use the heat generated by the filament. Such applications include incubators, brooding boxes for poultry, heat lights for reptile tanks, infrared heating for industrial heating and drying processes, and the Easy-Bake Oven toy. When used for lighting in houses and commercial buildings, the energy lost to heat can significantly increase the energy required by a building's air conditioning system, although during the heating season such heat is not wasted.
Because of their inefficiency, incandescent light bulbs are gradually being replaced in many applications by other types of electric lights, such as fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL), high-intensity discharge lamps, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Some jurisdictions, such as the European Union, are in the process of phasing out the use of incandescent light bulbs by banning them with laws to force them being replaced with more energy-efficient lighting.
Also a cheap way to make ligth.

place table lamp behind camera & point it at you. make sure lighting isn't too harsh when you film :] if it's too harsh, you can place a really thin white cloth over the head of the lamp/bulb (just make sure it doesn't touch the bulb so it doesn't fry/burn the cloth).

Your average desk lamp is usually good for lighting (best bet is to get one with an adjustable stem).
If you need something taller, go for the tall floor lamps with multiple lights and adjustable stems.

well if i just said "light bulb" that could mean a lighting fixture on the wall, a flashlight, a standing lamp, a desk lamp, etc...so I made it more specific.

Yeah, but we don't have to tell him exactly what to do. He has to be creative. Test things out. I just give him the basics and only a good movie maker can turn this intro something awesome.

well maybe you don't, but i was just giving him the lighting set-up that worked for me :]
now he can add this set-up to the list of things to try.

You could use a light bulb indeed.
You can point it directly in your face for hard light or you could reflect it against a wall or a piece of foam board, reflection screen, etc.
You can also add baking paper in front of your lamp to create a soft box effect. Baking paper can get hot and won't burn. A4 paper also works but will remove more light but is still use full sometimes.
It's also nice to add colored plastic in front of a light and point that somewhere in the background yo make it a bit more cheer full. Think off the lights in the disco's you can remove the plastic to change colors.
