Let's talk 'Small YouTubers'...

You can still get famous on YouTube. It is just a lot harder. You need to output excellent content consistantly. Hard work will be payed of. Took me half a year to reach 1000 subs. Just a week ago a famous player noticed my content and I have 1300 subs now.

Congrats man!

it can still happen, but you have to work harder and be dedicated

like at the start of this year I only had 95 subscribers, now I have 221. might not be much, but this shows that I am doing something right and the more you put in, the more you get out of it

Finding a niche is also a useful tactic, I know when Dark Souls 2 came out nobody big was doing an informed sorcerer walkthrough, so I did one, now if you search for dark souls 2 sorcerer walkthrough, my stuff is all on page 1. This got me to 2.5k since I started back in April. Putting out content that is rarer is a great way to get noticed. Especially if you're a gaming channel.

YouTube is a part of the entertainment industry at this point. A lot of the same things that apply to unknown actors, singers, and what have you... is also going to apply to new YouTubers.

I completely agree with this. You need to carve out a niche. I did some tutorial videos for NHL games and XCOM, tried to optimise the SEO and they still provide very consistent views for me months later because I'm not competing against too many other videos. I'm still very small - but if you told me last year that I'd be getting 500+ views per day from my channel, I'd have told you to get outta town!

If you want to upload content that is already flooded on YouTube (for gamers, I suppose that includes GTA, CoD, Minecraft) then you had better make sure that you have a unique spin on things. You want your videos to be searchable, so unless you are very very lucky and have something unique, "GTA V funny moments" or "CoD Trickshot montage" isn't going to cut it as you get buried in SEO hell

YouTube should have a section within the 'Best Of YouTube' page for smaller channels. Maybe have something where you apply for your channel to be featured amongst others. Probably never gonna happen but its a good idea I think.

Yes... lets talk about how the big guy puts "us" small youtubers down. How "we" are insignificant. How "we" can talk about the lack of views / subs but nothing changes because YouTube doesn't care about "us"

Lets not... lets just do YouTube and have fun. Don't sweat the damn numbers. Newsflash: YouTube isn't going to promote the small guy, they are a business, they got limited resources. And... Those that got big didn't start out that way. They did their thing and grew. People see right trough shallow folk to which numbers mean everything. And guess what? They will leave your channel laying on the wayside. You are either real and genuine, or too preoccupied with A) Getting views, B) Getting subs or C) Making DAT YouTube living. While I would enjoy more of A, B and C they don't lead my YouTube life and I sure as hell don't cry about it. IDGAF about the numbers. And neither should you. Have fun. Because numbers will just bring about your doom. (and millions of these threads, which then make me reply to them in a total "male appendage" fashion... according to some).
