Lense question

I have the canon 700d with standard kit lens, I am thinking of getting a new lense that will give a more blurry background such as 50mm.

Will it work as a blurry background if I am sat a way back from the camera as well as up close?

When I had a 40mm lens I found that I had to sit further away from the camera due to it not being that wide, 50 will be similar to that but if its the 50mm 1.8 lens you will get the blurry background you are after. Keep in mind that at 1.8 you might struggle to stay in focus when moving around as the depth of field is really shallow. I got the 28mm 1.8 and I bought myself a wireless remote to help me focus, it makes life a whole lot easier and allowed me to shoot at 1.8 far away from the camera confidently.

I recommend prime lenses with apertures around f2.0, the lower the number the more blurry the background will be, of course with the shallow depth of field it is quite hard to stay in focus of you're going to be moving closer and further away. Something like a 25mm or a 35mm should be ok since they don't zoom too far in, but it's good to have a wireless remote to focus the camera or you could use EOS utility to control the camera from a computer. You'll be able to get a good blurry background being far away from the lens if the aperture is set to a lower f stop :)

Thanks for your advice guys. It would be handy to use the camera canon software to see myself if I'm in focus on the screen but my macbook doesn't have a cd drive so I can't install the software on it :(

If you still want to buy a 50mm lens, please buy the f1.4 one! Mine is f1.8 and I bought it because it was cheaper than the f1.4 and I was still a beginner. Now I regret it so much. 50mm f1.4 is the cheapest and the most affordable f1.4 lens I think. JacksGap uses it and he said that it's a great cheap lens.

Try here for your camera model and then select your operating system: uk/Support/Consumer_Products/product_ranges/cameras/eos/index.aspx
Thanks for that that's really helped me:)
Also one more quick question, with a lense such as the 50 or 40mm are you still able to use auto focus on it?

Yes although it is best to focus manually where possible, autofocus does have its uses but for many videos it is easier to use a remote and manually focus :)
