Is this a good idea.

Well in my experience, for example if a cod commentator I watch started doing lets plays on their channel too, I`d unsub.
My advice is, @OP if you want to do lets plays create another channel.

there's no harm in him doing a few test runs to see how his subs respond to it, if they dont like it lesson learned, if they do like it BONUS!:)

Alright so the basic niche i hold is a cmentator which i am lol. Any tips on expanding that niche?
 
Depends on how FPS focused your channel currently is. If oyu already uplaod a varied set of content then go for DMC but if your channel say only focuses on COD stuff dont go to DMC because they will not be interested.

Also notice how i didnt say do a minecraft series, they are way to overdone by this stage IMO.

If you take wing of redemption for example, he wanted to start let`s plays, he gets ~30k views per CoD video but only got ~1-3k views on his lets play videos so he moved them to a new channel so anyone who wanted those could watch them there , and he wouldn`t need to spam his main fan base.
As a commentator do commentaries on new and up and coming topics ;)

Both above topics habe helped me a ton Lol so i know what ro stick to thanks guys :-). As a commentator could i also do live comms, multicoms etc?

looking at my niche fan base and everything lol i may make a new channel for lets plsys etc because i slso look at gold glove and he also does his lets plays on a different channel
 
I would say if you are gunna do Live Coms and Multicons do a few practive ones first. It will be harder to keep your trail of thought whilst playing live and may waffle a bit more but definetly give them a go if thats what you wants to do.
