How would you deal with comments like this?

More nasty comments are continuing, and in fact increasing. This is a sample from today.

The problem is, my kids watch their channel in addition to other channels, and the oldest daughter is very capable on clicking to comments and reading them. There is no way I would let her read these vile little comments, so the question is, how to create a safe environment for our own kids, and other kids, on the platform ~ a perturbation of the F word and other vulgarities slipped in and was live for a whole day before I picked it up ~ it's not manually possible to filter off every single combination of swear words, and past videos don't have the feature to hold comments for reviews. At least the new videos do and I hold all comments.

I would like to have your input - how do you feel about videos and channels where comments are disabled? Are you still likely to subscribe and watch, or does it turn you off?

I maintain my previous position - if I have 100% certainty that disabling comments does not affect traffic, I will disable comments channel wise. A small price to pay to have a kids safe area.

You could download the youtube kids app if you are sharing your devices with your children. Tell them to use the kids app and dont use the browser for youtube. I dont think kids app displays any comments. Also its a little easier to use the kids app instead of the browser so they might be naturally inclined to use the app. Browser is a little bit annoying.

Theres another app, the main youtube player app. I dont use the main youtube app because i dont like the experience as an uploader. So i mostly use my browser to use youtube and i use the youtube kids app for my son.

So in my setup above i wouldnt download the main youtube player because they might use that instead of the kids app. If i were a certain age group i might be naturally inclined to use the main app more because it shows cooler adult stuff.

I am sorry you're going through this, it's disheartening because your girls seem so sweet! Lots of nasty comments appear on our channel too and I don't have enough time in the day to block/delete them. Do you have certain words to be automatic filter out that you notice appears often on the comment section? I have a list of like 50words that gets filter out right now I believe since I'm not on my computer to check.

Yep, I've got an extensive list I downloaded, and have been adding to, in addition to lots of wildcard characters. Unfortunately every few days something slips through, and I'm very worried Ely (the oldest) will read it and it's a terrible thing for a 6 year old to read.[DOUBLEPOST=1473932667,1473932599][/DOUBLEPOST]
I have a kids channel too and I always thought about this and I found out below setting might help you. Great channel btw, my kids love it.

thanks ~ yep I've got all of those in, and several more.... but it's hard to catch every possible permutation of offensive words.[DOUBLEPOST=1473932953][/DOUBLEPOST]
It's difficult to say what kids would do if they feel they can't leave comments. My feeling would be that most kids won't care (how many comments on your videos are actually from kids, I would guess it's mostly S4S and people from your network commenting right? The only risk as you say of course is that the algorithm will downrank your videos if no comments enabled, but haven't seen any proper analyses on that anywhere.

If it would be me, I would spend some time to build up your profanity filter with words that slip through. After a while it should be pretty tight then I would assume when people run out of options to swear on your channel.

Yep, I've been working hard on the filter, added many variations on top of what I've downloaded, and several foreign language lists as well, as we are getting more foreign comments.

I wonder if anyone knows if there is a way to add a wildcard, such as the old DOS * and ?[DOUBLEPOST=1473933124][/DOUBLEPOST]

I didn't realize the kids app doesn't show comments ~ that's a great idea. I will install that on their tablets. I should spend more time exploring the kids app...

Ok so tbh this is probably just a sad or bored kid who is taking his anger issues out on you !
I would Delete & probably block him or her if it continued but keep in mind that his/hers views. Seems like they are spending a lot of time on the channel !

But Delete and block, never bother to answer mean and hateful comments !!

Yeah its interesting the app. Theres a couple day delay before your new vids show up on the app. And ive tried to sort my homepage to make my links appealing on both kids app and regular youtube. They show a little differently on kids.

But only about 15% of my views are from kids app. I mostly use it to reduce the amount of accidental curse words i hear in some videos. Really bothers me when my son hears this stuff.

Very useful for us to try and keep our kids safe in a public world. My kids are too young to see the comments but I'm torn on disabling them or not because I like engaging with our subbies. This list is helpful thanks :)
