How does a yt beginner have 40k views?

I have seen a few people with their first video (kind of a normal video - non viral type) get 40k views in 1 week?

How is that possible?

does promotional ads actually work? Is it worth it to pay them? Do you actually get more subscribers or is just random views?

I got 6000 views on a video in one night with adwords once. (And about 20 subscribers)
Thankfully I didn't have to pay the full price, because it was wayyyyy more than I had planned on using. :P

1. It is a minor viral video even if you think it is not, I gained exactly that number in one day (6k) for my mustang crash video WITHOUT doing anything other than posting it.
2. They paid for it (imho the dumbest thing you can do, people that pay for anything promotional to jack up their views when just starting out have a serious self worth issue).

I've seen several youtubers who started out the same time as me & got thousands of subs & views so quickly... I wondered how they did this.. then yeah I found out they were buying them! O.o I actually haven't heard from these youtubers for about 2 months now.

I have been on youtube for 2 months as of yesterday / today and during my first month I got about 50k views. I'm a gaming channel and I made some guides for a brand new game, advertised them on the appropriate forums and gained a bunch of views that way. Also by titling things a certain way you get to the top of the search list. When I started I did a Cities: Skylines hard mode run right from the start, and so now if you search that I am the first one. If you "advertise like a shameless *****", as one youtuber said, and know how to play the search system, you can get the views.
