Most people have no idea where to put the mic. Get it within 6 inches of your face and turn the input volume down. It's a condenser, not a shotgun mic and is of little value being further away.

Ugh, very much this. I don't know which is worse, the "I put my Snowball on the other side of the room" guys or the "I have my Snowball taped to my face" guys.

heh, indeed. Too far let's me echo-locate the layout of your room. Too close... I don't need to hear you swallow. Rule of thumb is a hand width away and 45 degrees to the left or right.

LOL well not only that but with most USB mics, especially USB condensers, they're sensitive enough to hear a fly far one room over, so you get people with the mic pressed against their teeth and the waveform ends up being one solid block.

Yeah really the issue is that its a cardioid pattern, when you'd be better off with a hypercardioid or supercardioid pattern mic for an in-room recording. I use one for my endplates but I don't know of any that are USB.
