Hi there, so as you will know there is this whole "Harlem Shake" craze going on right now, but i'm confused that I see alot of youtube partners doing it, but isn't the music copyrighted? The same goes to gangnam style too, how are they doing this?

Anyone know the answer to this weird concept?

I'm imagining most of them do it anyway..
I'd imagine the big youtubers would get permission, but no way to be sure!

Yea, they might just not be aware about copyright and such, quite possible I think.
That or Psy dosen't mind and claims the videos so he earns money from them, that would not surprise me either.

It is copyrighted. They definitely do not have permission but their video will just be claimed by Content ID which is harmless so they aren't profiting from it. It's pretty obvious the Label will want to earn dat moneyz and not block it so it's safe to do.

Yes it is. Many people are getting content matches on it. Larger networks may have a licence allowing them to use the media in any of the channel videos without issue. But you should check whether your network owns such a licence before using it otherwise you will likely get a content match :)

In cases like gangnam style the videos makes money for the owners so it often slides by. If you dont claim it chances are you wont get in trouble but the risk is still there. I made a Gangnam Style flash mob video which i didnt claim and I didnt get un trouble. It was claimed and monetized by whomever owns its and they collect the money for it.

If I owned that music I would sit back and collect my money. Because that's what match would mean right? I wouldn't want anybody to stop making these vids. lol
