Getting an Idea for a Channel...

Le Fancy Narwhal

The Fanciest of All Narwhals
Hello! Just to preface, I've made two channels over the past few years, each of which garnered about 100 subs in a relatively quick amount of time. The first one was a more skit-based, quirky thing (Le Fancy Narwhal), and the second was a gaming channel. Each one was actually very successful for the time they were active. Now, with more time going into next year, and some experience under my belt, I really want to try again and make youtube a more permanent hobby. The problem is, I just can't figure out what I want to do! I'm passionate about so many things! I would like to do everything, but I realize that I must focus on one sort of niche and focus on it. The problem with my gaming channel was I felt like I was spread too thin and I was making too much content. I can't seem to find inspiration to focus on just one thing, because doing just that one thing will keep me from doing the other things that I am passionate about (film, politics, gaming, discussion, etc.). So, my question to you is, how did you get the idea for your channel? What made you think of an idea that would make your channel different from others? I rejoined this site last month to prep for my rekindled youtube career, but no idea I have is really calling to me. I just know that once I think of that great idea, I'll be ALL in.

My first channel was actually a comic book channel which is completely different to this self-development one haha. I'm similar to you about not being 100% sure whether investing myself into this channel will be what I want to do maybe a year from now. But with the knowledge that I have of myself at this current moment in time, I feel as if this is best and I'm going as hard as I can. I think that's what is helpful when really getting into a hobby and endeavour.

Us humans are never sure how life will take us in x amount of time but we do with what we know now and hope for the best. Even if you and I were to change channels in the future, there would've been an endless amount of knowledge attained from our previous pursuits :). I wish you good luck with your decision making man, I know how difficult it can be :)

Thanks for your response! That really helps, actually. I just gotta be confident and go with my gut on this one. I suppose that I'll also get an idea of what I want to do as I go along and refine the theme of my channel. Thanks!

I got the idea for my channel by watching videos that I liked. I like watching reaction videos. I thought to myself, if these people can do it, so can I. And so I got started making reaction videos. I've changed the way I do my videos compared to other channels because I want to stand out. If you have many interests, you should follow the 80/20 rule. 80% of the time, make videos according to a specific niche, then 20% of the time make videos about your other interests. Good luck :)

I love science! But I felt cheated since at school we never got to learn it properly. In science classes only me and a few other science nerds would listen while everyone else messed around. This put pressure on the teacher forcing him to rarely do hands-on work and since no one was engaged we only skimmed across topics. It's not necessarily the teachers fault since he often went out of his way trying new ideas but it seemed no matter what he tried no one ever paid attention.

As a result I decided to make a YouTube channel. Before making a video I learnt everything I could about that particular topic and went onto condensing it into a script and then doing an experiment related to it. Learning about something is one thing, but be able to understand it to a level where you can confidently explain it is another. So not only was I learning, I was making a video that would hopefully help others.

Back at school we were just starting to learn about acids. Luckily for me just a week or two prior I had made a video about acid-base reactions! Despite the fact we had not yet learnt about acids yet, the teacher was stunned to see my hand raised to questions he was asking. They were questions he didn't expect to be answered but the teacher speaks in a way where he will ask a rhetorical question before answering it... which worked out good for me XD!

Long story short, Destal Chemistry was forged when my desire to learn more was not adequately satisfied.

P.s, good luck finding you niche!

Considering my channel is "focused" on many things (hair care, self esteem, cooking), I don't know if I have great advice on how to decide on a single idea, but then again, why decide right now? See what you make when you have free rein over what you're drifting towards the most often, then you can cut out the things you're not finding yourself making on a regular basis and know what your channel's direction is going to be.

I think the most important part of creativity is just making things, and you can figure out how and why and what exactly you want to make as you go. Lots of people want to film, or write, or act, or build, but they just don't have an idea yet, and that can keep them from doing anything at all for far too long.

One of my favourite gaming channels is Frankieonpcin1080p and what he does is discussion over the top of the games regarding anything and everything. My favourite are his stories on WW2. Just try to pick a game that ties in to the subject you are discussing (this means you get to play lots of games too). If you are good at editing do highly edited gaming videos where you discuss random topics and then for filler just have gaming on the side. You could edit videos, facts and skits and things like that in to the gameplay. If done right it could be amazing and I would subscribe.

If you have multiple passions, I say put that into your channel and your brand. If you want to do let's plays but also do sketch comedy or skits, get organized and figure out a way that works best for you to make it happen. You don't have to be just a gaming channel or just sketch comedy. Be yourself. That's the best thing you can be and that's how you build a channel and gain a following. Do what makes you happy. You just need organization. You could start small releasing two videos a week where every Monday you do Let's Plays and every Wednesday you do sketches. It's all up to you. I can honestly say that having a schedule has really helped my channel grow and it's helped me stay on track.

Man I feel your pain I really do. It's one of those situations were you're going to have to do some market research and brainstorm, I don't anyone on here is going to come up with some brilliant idea for your channel. I wanted to do make YouTube videos for a few years, but I didn't have any solid ideas, over time I gained inspiration from certain channels, certain ideas going through my mind. I wanted my channel to be different but something that really emulated my sense of humour. Then one day just over 2 months ago, it hit me. I found a niche in the market so to speak. And that as they say is that...
