Gateway Videos...?

Hello all!

I keep hearing about these 'gateway videos' that you could make to potentially attract viewers to your channel. However, I don't see any specifics on what a 'gateway video' actually is in terms of the content. I did do an introduction to me as a gamer on my channel and I don't know if you could class that as one. If not could someone explain what the contents of one is exactly?

I am fairly new to all the video stuff despite having my channel for years :p

By 'gateway video' they mean any video that attracts alot of viewers, I think. A smaller video with more compressed content to attract audiences that don't already know you by your usual content, so that they can be introduced to you and look further into your channel.

I guess my video kind of was but I suppose it was too long, being a full 10 mins. A lot of people only listened for 1 min and a bit  I think in that case I need to review how I did and work on my commentary and think of ways to make it more exciting.

Btw, do you intend on uploading any more lengthier videos anytime soon?[DOUBLEPOST=1366879611,1366879447][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think for gateway videos, you need to first build up regular content to gateway to. You probably don't need to worry too much about that sort of thing until you get into a good rhythm with uploading.

I got some Age of Empires 1 recorded that I was going to use for my Intro video, however I had 3 lined up out of Stronghold, AoE and Saint's Row 3 (but obviously picked Stronghold). I should be using that Age of Empires stuff to elaborate a bit more on stratgey games in general, why I like them etc...

Maybe also more Stronghold, so that I can talk more about the economics in the game. Some Xbox videos too once I pick up my Elgato from the post office.

If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears! ;)

Perhaps it is because I've been watching so much Twitch livestreaming of late, but I don't really mind the game or the subject you talk about, I just want the videos to last for 10x longer and for there to be more of them.

I'd be happy to look into Twitch Livestreaming, if you're interested. I would most likley be streaming at the weekends though.

I like livestreams.

Do you suppose there is a great deal of difference between the aims of livestreaming and recorded Let's Plays? They seem to end up very different in practice, but is that out of two different audiences and entertainment values, or just because of their different limitations?

From my experience watching my friends livestream, I can say that it gives the chance for their subs and fans to interact with them a lot better. My friends usually invite people from the livestream to jump in and have fun. This was always with multiplayer games though. I can't be sure about single player, as I've never seen a SP livestream. You can totally tell a difference between them though. I suppose there's a bigger level of communication and it's live.

My channel trailer lasts about 2 minutes, and is basically a showcase of classic moments from my uploads whilst covering what I regularly get up to - in my case it's retro, ETS2, Minecraft, Kerbal and Sonic-related stuff while pointing out the fun I have with friends and family and that I like to interact with the community. I somehow managed to condense that into a short video and I think that since putting it up nearly a week ago it's working nicely.
