Gamers - How Do You Record Your Commentary?

I srsly have a timer right next to me so i wont go past the 15 minutes xDDD And like said above :D 10 minutes us fair enuf and edit dat shieeeeet and throw it on YT xD

I have to go with chopping up long sessions in order to be efficient enough at getting videos out.

My process is something like this: record for a couple hours (a 6 hour session once!). Then go through all the footage doing any editing, adding intros & outros. Next run everything through one big batch render which I usually let run overnight or while I'm at work. After everything is done, do quick spot-checks on every rendered video and then set everything to upload to my channel with scheduled uploads set up. That tends to take overnight as well.

I do try to note splits during recording when I can, but some games just lend themselves too well to losing track of time... ;)

Oh, and after everything uploads, it's time to set up the annotations... urgh!

I record at around 30 minutes at a time. Then bring both the video file and audio file into premiere pro and render them.

10 minute footage for me takes around an hour to render and export, so 30 minutes is 3 hours

I'm always a week in advance. If I have a video out on a Monday, chances are I've already finished all the videos up to the Monday after :D

I record about an hour or 30 minutes when am doing my let's plays the I just break it up that way it makes up time faster rather than recording all the different parts piece by piece.. It's like killing two birds with one stone lol :-)

For gameplay segments, I generally play games when I feel like it, then record as long as I play for and just chop up the footage into smaller pieces for faster uploads!

DawnCraft, on the other hand... gotta build first, record the timelapse while I build and then record the finished project. I should really start my next construction tbh... :D

I usually record an hour or two then split up at logical places and try to keep it fairly tight. The thing I dont quite understand is when I was doing my initial research, some people would use fraps to record the vid and audacity to record the audio. Then they would sync and render and then upload. But Audacity has a reputation (from the same guy I was researching) to be unreliable so I just used fraps to record both the vid and audio. The only downside to this method is you cant independantly adjust the audio levels from the vid, so you have to make damn sure you have the game sound levels just right, you dont want to know the amount of hours I threw out :(

On a side note for this thread, does anyone have any weird and wonderfull methods to get into the 'headspace' for commentating? Or do all YouTubers have to be naturally self confident and slightly strange in the head ? :)

most of my vids are livecomms so i record everything at the same time then edit it all together after, but if its not a livecomm ill just do the commentary after. If i make a few vids a day i save some for the following days! :)

Haha, my advice would be to download a free MOBA (or any similar game), use the spectate feature and practice commentating on what is happening in-game to yourself. You could record this with audacity (for just audio, maybe unreliable but it's less space on your hard drive) and play it back to yourself to see what it's like.

Even better, post the results somewhere for others to give you hints and tips on improving! :D

EDIT: Additionally, you could watch some great commentators, such as HuskyStarcraft or Totalbiscuit who have both done MLG (or something similar)

And what I mean by that, is do you record your one video a day? Do you record 2 hours of footage and snip it up into 15 minute slots?

I tend to record bits at a time (since most of the games I play are only 20-30 minutes play time anyway) and record about a week or two in advance. I haven't recorded anything in about 8 days!

I need to though, I'm starting to run out after tomorrow's upload! Oops!
Because its so difficult for me to record I usually pre-record tons of videos and steadily upload them :)
