Okay good, people who use After Effects for normal editing are very confusing people and should totally re-think the way they're living their life.

I know You may not want suggestions any more but I have free editing software which does the job REALLY well.
You may want to look up Lightworks its:
Free
has hundreds of effects
60 fps
720p for free version
Its quite good and I use it to create all of my video's.
Any way hope that helps and if you do decide to use it im happy to make a tutorial for you.

Why did you want to try an alternative? iMovie is a great video editor for simple videos, and there are plenty of tutorials on youtube to upskill your knowledge

Agreed, there's quite a lot you can actually accomplish with iMovie, so while it's not a good option for heavy duty, Hollywood stuff, learning to use it fully goes a long way.
