For the Oldies

I'm getting war flashbacks of my old channel and its super colourful and quirky custom made background, yikes!

You can still get one, I believe you have to have at least 500 subscribers to qualify, though.
I know but for some of us that's a looong way to go. I understand why YouTube's doing it though, to prevent people from hogging URLs and never using them.

you can now qualify by linking your google+ profile to your webpage
And then can you choose any custom URL or only the name of your webpage?

I'm a new channel so I have the new little baby /c/. I don't mind having that, but it annoys me that I don't get freedom in picking my channel's URL.

One of my channel has USERNAME, and my current channel was started in end of december, so I dont have Username and have /c/ in it

It changes it to whatever google+ name you have right now with an addition of a few characters.

However, you can easily change your google+ name temporarily to whatever you want minus a few characters, then add those few characters when it asks.

Ex// URL desired is "PotatoHead".
On google plus make your name "Potato H" or "PotatoH" (space doesn't really matter). Go change your name and when it asks for a few extra characters type in "ead". Your link will now be youtube.com/c/PotatoHead .

Now go back and change your google+ name to what you want to be. The url will stay the same.

*Note: apparently you can only change your google+ name three times a year*

Very useful information, thank you! I already have my custom URL but I'm sure I'll be facing that dilemma again, probably when I want a custom URL on Google+ (or vanity URL or whatever it's called there.)

Mine started in 2009 but I did not start posting till 2014. I still have the /user url. So even though my videos are not that old the channel appears to be with the url.

Some things I remember:

-Medals/awards. I would fake my country to get some.
-Groups. I remember join a few but I never used them?
-Posting on Peoples Walls (not the lame discussion tab they have now)
-Not being able to change your name or have spaces in it. So basically your display name and url were the same.
-Bulletins. You could update the bulletin when you did wanted, I guess.
-"friends" because you could be friends just like facebook
-when you didn't need a google+ to comment
-not strict passwords. My brothers password was "L" and then I watched him change it to "K" this was 2008 and now I don't think any site will let you have a one letter password. At one time my password was "ice."
-sub4sub and then people would unsub a few days later
-no channel had hit 1 million subscribers
- the subscribe button was yellow
-give a youtube video a 1-5 star rating.

Fun times. . . I guess.
