Finding your voice

Kirgle

"taking a swipe at everything"
I imagine for some people (maybe most??) this comes easy.
You put up your first video or 2, it clicks and you have your style that you carry on with you.

But maybe your like me. Maybe you put up some videos, with different approaches and styles and content.
In the beginning it is a little 'all over the place' but over time a pattern emerges and you settle into it.

My most recent video has elements of most things I have tried before, I have kept the good and cut the bad.
I got more ruthless with cutting the fat (even now I could be a bit more ruthless in truth).
This journey of learning to produce a video, and trial and error have really started to show promise.

This new video has generated more views and more subscribers in under a week than any thing else I have made.

If you are feeling stagnant or that you have stalled try something new, keep the popular bits and try find your voice. Have fun with it and you will find a unique formula that you enjoy and others will take notice of that.

I have a bit of a issue with finding my voice, or editing the video right. Some times it'***** or miss. It also depends what game I am playing. When I get into a game the editing seems easier.

I definitely think being ruthless is such an important part of editing! Especially for me who has a tendency to make long videos, I need to be ruthless when editing to decide what is funny, what isn't and what is good enough to keep the viewers engaged. Still working on it, but I know about it and am trying to keep myself in check! haha

Yep. I sometimes feel like I cut all the waste I could from a video.... Until I rewatch it a few months later. Then I start thinking? Why did I leave that in. Why did I leave such a long pause there.

Its good to go back and rewatch sometimes, it gives you a wake up call before you start the next video.

I can re-watch as soon as I've uploaded and think "Ugh. Why does that part go so long?! This is boring!!"
I gues it's a blessing and a curse that we are our own worst critics.

This was very helpful.. It's nice to know that other people have also struggled establishing their style on YouTube. I'm still experimenting, but I feel like I'm getting closer. Thanks for sharing!

That's why I watch my own video 3-4 times before rendering to make sure it's what I want

I usually feel good about my edits at render time but it's when I rewatch a video weeks later that I see things I should have cut or cleaned up.
