Editing software!

So I use windows movie maker a lot to do editing on my videos cause I never really have to edit much, well I started making montages and its ungodly to use, for some reason the preview lags badly and everything I can barely trim out parts!! Does anyone know a free editor I can use to trim and add like overlays or something? Thanks.

Final Cut Pro... It's free for the most part and you can add layers to your montages/ videos. One of the top editing softwares I've used that's free...for the trial. That's the catch.
