Doing My First Interview & Need Advice About Microphones

Hi. I bought a lighting kit and am looking for advice on what kind of microphone I need to buy. I am covering an event where I need to hold a mic up to someone and let them talk. Can I use a lapel mic? How does that even work? Does it have to connect with my camera? Do I need a fancy camera to use a mic or can I use my $99 digital hand held?

A lapel mic is designed for the wearer only as it attaches to your lapel. You could in theory hold it out for someone to speak into, but for an interview, that would look bad on camera.

You'll need to check your camera to see if it has a mic input jack. On a $99 camera, it would look like a headphone jack but had a little mic icon next to it.

And if anyone suggests a Blue Snowball, you can be sure they didn't read the post and have no idea what they're talking about. Gawds I'm getting sick of people suggesting that mic.

Would a lapel mic be my best option for now until I get a better camera? My camera actually has great sound quality. I just wanted to appear more professional. Thank you!

Honestly, for professionalism, the lapel mic won't help at all with the subject of your interview. You'll be recorded just fine, but they won't. Generally for interviews, a single mic that is moved back and forth from the interviewer to the interviewee is the standard imagery seen in media.

Good point about the microphone. I think I need a better camera with a light on it.
