Does monetising a small channel make sense?

A while back, when I realised pretty much anyone can have the opportunity to monetise their videos, I turned it on for most of mine.

The thing is, I hardly make anything from it because my views are fairly small, and so now I'm wondering, do you think the ads actually deter views and subscribers (if people can't be bothered to sit through an ad and/or move onto another video/channel)?

If so, I'd prefer the additional views and subscribers over a few pounds! :)

On a smaller channel I wouldn't put on anything besides overlay ads, even Skippable ads can turn people away on a channel they've never heard of before.

With your type of content, I doubt that ads will be that obstructive, since people are focused on the audio, not the visual content.

I don't know if the ads deter viewers for smaller channels. Maybe for a person who notices these things, but most people still ignore it.

I turned off my monetization because there was no need since I was a small channel and wasn't making anything from it. Small channels really shouldn't monetize their videos in my opinion, not for a while at least.

Small streams make large rivers :) So what if you are only making $2 a year - it is still $2 closer to pay day ;)
But it depends - unless your content is really good (and I mean finger-licking good), people (without add-blockers) will propably turn away from the content if there are too many adds :)

If something goes viral overnight, you'll be scrambling to set up monetization. Why not monetize but not turn on ads, you can always turn them on later.

In that case I wouldn't worry about the money until it's worth it. Right now he needs to build an audience.

Good topic. I was thinking the same. Can I enable monetizing but not display any ads? and later in the future go back to the video and enable it when the audience has grown?

Also what is a good subscriber number before enabling monetizing?

I would say that it doesn't really hurt.
Many people have adblock these days so they won't even be seeing the ads. I don't think ads hurt but DO NOT ADD NON SKIPPABLE ADS.
This will make people close your video most of the time :/

I know you might not make much but if you make uhm let's say 2$ per month that's already 2$ which you can use to pay for a steam game haha
