Does disabling ratings make you look bad?

I can't help but find your reasoning for disabling ratings kinda silly. There's a group of YouTubers against girl gamers? There's a group of people somewhere against something. I went on SA and got slammed in terms of feedback, got some downvotes, and I'm not disabling ratings because of it. It just seems odd to do that as a safety measure of sorts.

It makes more sense to keep them on, let people voice their opinion, and ignore them if your decide to. That's the freedom of the internet.

What is SA? I have no issue if people dislike the video genuinely. Everyone gets a dislike here and there, it's expected and it's normal. I'm talking about childish thumb spammers who create ten accounts just to thumb people down.

I was just asking for opinions, I don't want anyone thinking I can't handle criticism, cos that wasn't the point of my initial post.

And actually yes, there is, you'd be surprised how much sh*t females get for having gaming channels. Despite the fact that women have either very small or very unpopular channels for the most part (there are no women in the top 100 gaming channels on YT, and only 3 women in the top overall 100), many people think that if a female channel does well, then her gender is the only reason, hands down (cos you know, women can't be entertaining or funny unless they have their boobs out </sarcasm> lol). :giggle:

I get more flack than I care to discuss just because I have the word 'girl' in my name; to many (usually young boys and crazy feminists), it apparently means I'm an attention seeking whorebag who 'demeans' and 'insults' women (yes I actually got told that by someone), who only has views and/or subs for that reason alone. I get loads of PMs about it. Have done since day one. Always boys. Always under 18. Always tiny channels with little or no subscribers.

And that wasn't the only reason, if you have another look at my initial post I mentioned that it seems if you disagree with someone on YouTube (or online in general), people respond with childish thumbing down on loads of videos within about a minute. It's just something I noticed. I had a mild disagreement with someone yesterday and within seconds I had a fresh thumb down on about 10 videos.

I didn't say I was actually doing it, I was asking what people think of disabling ratings that's all. I very likely won't do it because I have over 300 likes and about 45 dislikes in total over 42 videos, so it isn't like they're damaging or anything. :) just wondered what people thought!

As I girl gamer, I completely understand what you mean about people automatically subjugating us to a role.
In my opinion, I think that if you put a video up, you should stick by it. Unless you feel that the video is a "mistake", then there is not much of a reason you should disable ratings. It's just reality that some people are not going to like some videos, and that's okay, because you can't please everyone...
If you feel that most of your videos are good and people are reacting positively to it, for the most part, then you should stand by what you created.
If you are very concerned about a video, there is always the option of deleting it, but then, that's a whole other story because it's like you're taking back what you just did.

I don't think I'd ever disable comments or delete a video if I got hate (I honestly can't imagine ever getting that level of it), if we do that the terrorists win! Or something. :giggle:

I'm not saying that those people who thumb down or assume because of your gender don't exist. It just seems unrealistic to disable ratings in response to them (mostly since you have 40 of 300). You don't have to prove yourself to anyone. Take in the criticism if there's actually any of it there, but otherwise handle it like a mature person.

The internet is full of immature people (as is the world honestly). That's why I say keep ratings up because you're better than that whole mess. When women who are gamers begin to blame it on their gender themselves, you're just making the problem worse with segregation versus helping it. You don't have to prove how true of a geek, nerd, or gamer you are to anyone. Just game. :)

I talk about this 'hate against girl gamers' because that is what I personally have experienced. I don't 'blame my gender' for my experience, I blame little immature boys for not being able to handle people of the opposite sex being online and doing better than them.

I even got stalked over being a female gamer (literally stalked, threatened and harassed, had about 15 hate videos made about me for two months it was horrible) by one guy who I swear to God I did not know from Adam. And yes I have only been around for two and a bit months, so you can see how much stick I've had! He lodged false copyright claims, flagged all of my videos, thumbed them down, left bad comments on them... it was just vile behaviour and according to him, because I am a female commentator and he doesn't like female commentators who won't add him on Skype (he has had endless channels shut down because he does it to lots of them).

Perhaps I've been unlucky and I've had a bad experience, who knows?

Sorry, I hope you don't think I'm arguing - friendly discussion! :D hehe, just trying to explain why I brought the whole girl gamer thing up at all.

Personally I totally agree with you - I think let gamers be gamers regardless of gender, but we live in a sad world where the internet has brought back the kind of sexism that fits in with a 1930s way of living, lol *facepalm*

Nah, I don't think we're arguing at all. I understand your position, and I know how it feels to get stalked. I had it happen to me in middle school, but regardless, it does seem like you have had more bad luck then other people, which is a shame. Keep truckin' (or playing in this case).

I don't mind thumb gnomes, and am not upset or offended by them. Everyone has them, as we know.

But I have noticed that the thumbs always appear at particular times. Usually after a disagreement with someone, however calm, however heated. Not always, sometimes they just pop up genuinely, but once in a while I'll get thumbs down on a whole batch all at once. This will continue for a while and then I'll usually lose a sub and this will stop.

The more views and subs I'm getting, I'm noticing the more thumbs down I am getting. I know my vids are generally good (or I'd have a lot less likes), but there's a whole tirade against female gamers on YouTube which means that just by being on there I am 'asking for it'.

I mean thanks for the view and all but.... well, f*ck off if you're not actually gonna watch the vid, you know?

Anyway. IS it a bad idea to disable ratings? I'm not overly fussed about thumbs. It's views, comments and my subs that matter to me. But I worry because usually the videos that have ratings disabled are usually really, really disliked and may automatically make people think 'well this must be rubbish'.

TL:DR - I'm rambling. But, is disabling ratings a good/bad idea? What are your thoughts?
I would leave it at normal, having ratings lets you know if people like your content if you start a new series and ratings are disabled and they don't comment then they may not like it and therefore you could be wasting your time without knowing it.

Yeah Frankie, you don't seem like the kind of girl to ever let the terrorists win! :D Go team, let gamers be gamers...
