Does adding CC to your video affect the retention number?

You may think you want my accent. You really don't
I recently added CC to one of my longer videos, but because it has my brother in it as well, I had to watch bits of it back a couple of times.

I just checked my analytics, and the retention on it is at 146%

Does adding CC affect retention? If so, does this mean that any increase I've had in average retention is basically void?

Adding CC helps users understand you better :) I mean there are some users who don't quite understand what they are hearing so it's always good to have CC (Subtitles on) I been using them on my videos lately and they have improve a lot! :)

No I mean like does you watching the video in order to add the CC affect the retention value. So like because I watched it back two or three times to check that it was correct, that increased the %?

Oh, there I dunno but I always watch it when editing it in the same place of the editing since you can watch it there. But I don't know if youtube removed that your views and retention count towards your analytics I am not sure there.

I download the YT generated captions since it has the time codes on it. Then I go through and clean up & correct the captions but watch the raw file on my computer instead of watching the YT version since it's a lot of pausing and going back and forth. For me, uploading a caption file adds a view, I'm guessing since the video auto-plays like when adding cards. So I'm not sure how that affects retention.

Yes, when you rewatch a video(or go back and watch it again, same thing) it adds in retention, retention is basically for how long you watch a video so if you watch a 1 minute video twice replaying it, it will be at 200%
Which also gives you more revenue ofcourse

Yeah, I thought so..
I'm at the stage where revenue is still negligible, so it just kind of feels like unintentional cheating, haha

I think that any views done via video manager (annotations, closed captions etc) will be pretty much ignored by YouTube's algorithm for things like audience retention because, by definition, YouTube knows that it was the channel owner.

I agree that it's pretty weird that they register as an official view but that's as far as it goes IMHO. :)
