Think of thumbnails like a book cover. People don't pick up a book usually just based on the book title. A striking book cover is likely to interest readers into exploring further. The same goes for thumbnails. If the thumbnail's image is rather uninteresting, blurry, or poorly lit, fewer people are likely to click on it because the visual appeal isn't there (despite what your video is actually about). People on the Internet are extremely visual creatures with short attention spans, so image plays into everything here.
