Do captions help with search?

dont forget to open up fan translations, so people can translate for you into other languages! the support I got for this in my last upload far exceeded anything I expected.

its definitely worth the extra effort when you have less content like me.
and also I imagine people that are hard of hearing will have it show up in searches for them specifically too?

With the fan translating, how can you be sure the translation is correct?
And more important, how to ensure that a hater (or aggressive competitor) is not trying to sabotage you by putting profanity or abuse in there that can get you striked?

I can never be 100% sure. all i can do is google translate it back to english and check for any obvious out of place stuff. so far everyone that has contributed has also mentioned who they are. (they are big time supporters, and names i recognise and trust)

Since youtube tracks the usernames of those that contribute subs, do you think they would strike a channel because of false subtitles?

I've been reading lots of comments on other big kids and toys channels.

There are some really passionate haters out there - I don't know what their problem is, they hate kids, or they hate toys, or they hate their own miserable lives, or they have tried and failed to amount to anything and it's eating them inside and the only thing they can do is put down kids and their parents.

So I'm concerned an idiot like that would create a dummy account under your channel name and submit racist or hate-filled subtitles that other viewers would then flag your channel. Imagine if 100 viewers all flagged it, what would YT do? Take down the video? Strike the channel? I don't know. Then you'll have to appeal, the nightmares of all those emails.

I'm just wondering are there any safeguards against jealous competitors or haters?

that sounds absolutely horrible, I'm really sorry you have to deal with things like that. It's the LAST thing I'd expect on a channel like yours, and others like them. I can only imagine it is jealousy of the channel growth.

as for safeguards, the translations don't automatically go up, you have to personally approve them yourself before they are visible. so as long as you double check, you should be okay.

I'm not sure there are any safeguards. I don't believe the bad word filter in the youtube settings does anything for the CC. As I was pondering the CC last night after posting. I thought perhaps you're getting more bang for your buck on CC due to the users who are consuming your content? Perhaps children are more likely to search a more random set of keywords, thus getting picked up in CC than adults.

How much of your traffic is "searched traffic" For me it's less than 15% as most of my traffic comes from related video and suggested video.

Our Search traffic is 0.9%. All traffic is from suggested, browse and temporary playlists.
I get what you're saying that CC contribute by viewers help with catching random search terms - but that's for English isn't it?

The main reason of foreign language CC is to actually get the algorithm to place videos in foreign markets?

Say I want to place my videos in Vietnam. So I translate the tags/title/descriptions and input those under the Vietnamese language options. Then if I have Vietnamese CC contributed by Vietnamese viewers, would those CC make much of a difference considering the metadata is already translated?[DOUBLEPOST=1471029063,1471028860][/DOUBLEPOST]

Even though I have detailed filters setup (4 filters from different sources), something slipped through I was not happy with.
So I decided to now hold all comments for review. Adds more work unfortunately.
I will now set about researching how important comments are to overall video and channel ranking. Are they really needed?

So it is helpful then, that is good to know. Does it take long to do?
I've found it takes me about 5x the length of the video. But I use the method where I type them directly to YouTube as the video plays so I can position them right. Some people say typing out the transcript separately and uploading a file is faster, but the timings were always off for me so I might as well type them and position them myself.

Yeah that is what I would be worried about. Thanks for all the help.

Well they could help people of other languages to tell others of your channel. But Idk about search. What does help for search is translated titles, tags, about section, etc.

I've appeared in search results for keywords unrelated to my title, description, or tags BUT had mentioned the words in my video that were captioned. I tend to find that out when I look at the YT analytics and wonder why some search terms are appearing.

Well don't quote me on this. When I post a video with captions it usually does better. I think each of the captions are a key word so it could help you rank. But make sure to say related terms in your video, so the captions will pick it up.

Yes it helps. Massively.

Great to know but do you have to caption every single word that you say in the videos?? Or do you just caption the keywords/search terms??

Because I am thinking of putting captions on my videos(most likely will) but not sure if I should caption every single word that I say in the video. :)
