Dead subs

I see it as, one point this person enjoyed my content, but maybe they got busy/couldn't find time for/stopped enjoying my videos. Which is why a part of me doesn't view the number as "active people watching your videos". Which is why I get pissy when people make remarks about "so and so having 10,000 subs but only 500 views". I'm subbed to around 35 channels, around 10 new videos every day on my feed. I watch maybe 5. Not because I don't like their content, but it's hard to actively keep up with 35 different channels, at least for me with my busy schedule.

The older channels will decrease in views as they grow gaining very view, the likes of me, I'm 20 years old and grew up with the likes of UberHaxorNova, ImmortalHD, SlyFoxHound, Kootra,Cr1tiK4L and the likes. That generation has grown up, we have lives, jobs, families, other commitments cand well we have grown up. I never have the time to look at my old favourite YouTubers because well....life, in the past 4 years my life changed dramatically ever since moving out, finding a job and living on my own. And a lot of people who my age who grew up with these people are in a similar stage in their life where we don't have time for it we need to go to work at 8AM to be able to pay the bills for the house and food and what not along with attending college/university I mean a lot has changed since those guys started. They make a living off of YouTube and thats all they do wether as the likes of us average users have to go to a 9-5 jobs with other commitments on top of that.

I wouldn't call them dead subs, just people who grew up and moved on

I've been noticing more and more major channels have anywhere from 500k to 1.5 million subs, but only about 20k to 40k views on the last 50 videos they made. do you think the dead subs misrepresent how popular a youtuber actually is? or is the subscribe button just another thumbs up button instead of a commitment to the channel? thoughts?

Subs don't matter anymore anyway. I'd base my viewership based on the view count, twitter followers, and comments. Subscribing doesn't do much now because of the youtube layout. The easiest way to keep people watching your s**t is to always announce your channel name. That way they remember that name. I have never went to a channel I'm subscribed to without typing in their name manually from remembering them.

I also think there's a lot of follow for follow stuff going on, because for a lot of people, subscribers count matters. For my channel, I got 15 subscribers without even posting a video. Just people who subscribed to me after I posted a comment on a video, probably hoping for a follow back.

While I would obviously rather have active subs than dead subs, I would still rather have dead subs than never having them sub in the first place for the psychology benefits of having a higher sub count.
