Crazy Editing Trick

So, there's a WheezyWaiter video that features a clone tossing an item to another clone - 3:53 here:

I have a few theories on how it could be done, but they all seem pretty unlikely. I'd love to hear from you GFX people as to how you think it was done!

EDIT: In WheezyWaiter's case, he actually has a cloning machine, which makes this trivial. But I'm curious as to how you'd replicate the effect if you were trying to do it by yourself.

Hmm. I'm guessing that he had made the motion on the left in one segment, then had someone throw the paper from off screen in the second clip while he was on the couch. There's no "trick" per se, mostly just matching up the clips to look good.

Haha I watched the last scene so many times. I seriously believe he has clones now .___.

To me the shadow of the book looks off to me, but who knows :S

Yeah, I went over and over through it. Though on the off-chance he's lying and DOESN'T have a cloning machine, managing to time the whole rest of it is just as impressive. The long shots just blow me away.[DOUBLEPOST=1365914496,1365914408][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah, but you'd have to do a TON of takes to get the arc right. And with them being long takes anyway, where the timing has to be exactly right...just...I don't get it.

Yeah, I suppose I wasn't very clear on that. Editing the OP :)
If it was me, I would do a split screen, and mark where I am throwing the object (in other words where I want it to disappear), using a mic stand or something to show where I let go of it. I would then film the other side of the split screen with someone throwing the object from the mark to me. The mark would not show on the final shot as the split screen would hide it. I could always mask out any part of the mark to hide it if necessary. That is all without after effects.

Second way I would do it, would be to use after effects, film the "catch" first in split screen, then film the "throw" in split screen. Animate in the object (which is what the object looks like in the video), and then line it up (easy to do) in after effects.

Anyway, those two theoretical possibilities. I have a couple of other ideas that would work involving animation and masking, but either one of these would likely work quite well.

If you notice, the magazine isn't fully in frame during the throw, so it would be relatively easy to line up the shot.

Yeah, my real concern though is that it seems like a pretty direct arc. If the out-of-focus clone had tossed it, you'd have more leeway with the trajectory.[DOUBLEPOST=1365914850,1365914833][/DOUBLEPOST]
he has a doppelganger... looks like he found some one who looked just like him!

Well, it coulda been Michael from Vsauce ;)

I don't think it would really be a problem. With the magazine mostly out of frame (check it frame by frame) during the throw, this would be relatively easy. I think the magazine was added in post. He never threw it. It was thrown later.
