Content or Editing? Steak or "Sizzle?

I was wondering: when you watch YouTubers, how much does the editing matter to you? For you to watch someone's videos, do they need to have lots of editing behind their videos (flying in text, jump-cuts, music in the background, etc), or are you more interested in overall message behind the video?

Personally, editing is not too important for me when I'm watching YouTubers. As long as they have good video quality (i.e. using a good camera), audio is clear, and they have a good presence on camera, I am happy. And, of course, they need to be saying something that I feel like is worthwhile.

Basic role of editing: cut clips and stick them together.

Advanced role of editing: keep hooking the viewer using special effects to make him watch as much as possible of your content.

for me most of the time I focus on a content more that visual effects. But obviously sometime visual effect make a video looks more attractive. But make sure it's not distracting people :)

For me, the editing can come down to how long the video takes to get to the point. A lot of smaller YouTube creators tend to make over-long videos that aren't really about anything, or what they're about doesn't seem to happen until a good number of minutes in. That's fine for those who just want to hang and "chat" with them (chatting happening in one direction), but I find a subscription box filled with 15-to-20 minute videos that are mostly chatting about this or that to be disappointing. Most videos can be a bit shorter, in most general categories.

Jump cuts are NOT a sign of editing skills! It is in fact poor editing! When I worked in tv anyone who let a jump cut slip by on air was suspended and if it happened enough, fired!

Any jump cut video gets an automatic closed window from me!

Youtube and Tv are not the same medium. I imagine you're missing a lot of good content by escaping everytime you see one!
In fact, I'd go so far as to say Youtube's foundation is based on the Jump cut. It's just one of those things that work really well for the websites style! (Although there are many styles within it) haha

Editing definitely makes cool videos, and some of my favorite YouTube videos have incredible editing, but it's not a must. I agree with you, as long as you have decent audio/video quality I will watch.

Sorry. I'll disagree with this point till I'm dead and buried! Fine if you like it, it's not for me.

this is not to put down straight cuts or smash cuts. Just ones that violate the 30 degree angle rule

If the content is good then I will forgive the editing up until a point. Any video should at least have the basic editing nailed though.
