commentaries

It's a hard thing to judge, different people like different things. Personally, I prefer commentators who don't talk over dialogue, keep their comments focused on the game and don't wander off on random tangents, also a bit of humor can never be a bad thing, you usually need to keep an upbeat tone of voice as well, try not to sound bored or monotonous or droning. Hope that helped a lil :p

I think if you're watching somebody commentate it's usually for something you're either familiar with or something you don't care about. So unless the upcoming line of dialogue is amazing or hilarious I want people to talk over dialogue, because I hate long pauses of no commentary, because that's what I'm there for - the commentary.

Otherwise this is really vague. Are you referring to games, shows, or in general? Because your answers will vary within a category, but will vary even more when including all possible commentaries.

Commentaries with a purpose to the situation at hand is important. Most people come to see what the video is, so if the video is about cats, you should be talking about cats.

I think it's really about not keeping your audience bored, but not being too awkward either. You need to be able to react to the game in some way, though the reaction very much depends on what's happening and your own personality and commentating style, and it's good to talk to the viewer, when there isn't necessarily anything to react to in the game, and I wouldn't say it necessarily has to be about the game, although it can be and might be better in some cases. Of course, if there's nothing to talk about of the game, it's better to just talk about some topic else than the game like how you're doing and what you think of recent events or anything like that. Some games are more action-packed and have a lot going on and in some games you kind of have to entertain the viewer more.
