Canon Rebel T3i Memory Capability and Microphone

Hello everyone!

I am ready to finally buy a T3i. My only concerns are the microphone and the memory. I heard that the T3i needs an SDHD memory card. I am wondering how much memory it would need for say 10 minutes of recording? I have a 4GB SDHD card but I have a feeling I am going to need a much bigger card. Also in terms of a microphone, will I need any external microphone with this camera?

I would love to hear peoples opinions on this camera, and their experiences.

You won't need an external mic, but you should get one. The built in mic is terrible. I use about 1gb to 1.5gb per minute of 1080p recording, a nice sized 64GB one is always nicer.

The on-board mic is garbage. I use the Rode VideoMic Pro, which is about $230 or so, but is well worth it. I bought the Rode VideoMic (not the Pro, just the base model) before and it was even worse than the on-board mic. As for SD card capacity, I use a 32GB card and tend to have 2GB or so taken up by the 4 minutes of footage I shoot for every video. I'd recommend at least an 8GB card, though since they're not expensive, you should buy a bigger one.

Gotta remember the recorder as well, a Zoom h1n for ex. The VideoMic should be pretty s**t if you connect it directly to the t3i, the preamps in it are really bad. Same goes for the videomic pro I'd assume

With a standard SD card, you'll need at least a class 6 (because of the HD filming - I think it's 35Mbps).

I use a Class 10, 16Gb and I can record for plenty of time :)

16GB+ will be best, I would just go with 32GB because the cost difference really isn't much. I would also make sure your card is class 10 or an ultra otherwise your recording will stop because the cameras buffer is full as it can't write to the card in time.

I'm not telling you to directly go to my channel, but if you'd listen to the audio from one of my videos, I think you'd find it to be pretty good quality.
