Hi guys.

I bought this lens as I wanted a blurred background effect.

I can't zoom with the lens. So I am setting it up in my bedroom, and the cmaera is 3.5 meters away from me and I am still not in shot. I can't really go back any further. Even if I could it would feel like the camera is miles away.

I obv aren't doing anything wrong? Maybe I need another lens?

This is the effect I want

Hi guys

I currently have 2 lenses for my Canon

I am in the stage of moving bedrooms.

This is the effect I want

I have worked out I have 3.5 feet between the end of my bed and where my tripod will go which isn't enough room for my 55mm 1.8 lens.

sooooooooo annoying!!

What lens can you recommend that has a crisp finish but a blurred background?

Thanks in advance

Will

the bluring backround is to do with the focus isnt it? or do different lenses change the type of focus? im not completely clued up on cameras

What you are going to want is a wide as possible lens, a low Fstop, and distance between the actor and the background. The more extreme these three factors are, the more pronounced the effect will be. With the wide lens you'll aslo want the camera close to the actor, for indoors this is probably the best possible set up.

I achieve an effect similar to this with a CanonEF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens, however you'll need more space for this. Probably not great for a bedroom.

I also have a CanonEF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens that could do this, you just want the actor as far away from the background as possible. The closer they are to the background, the wider we have to go, but the Fstop needs to stay low too which will get progressive more expensive.

the CanonEF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens is $100, I might say to try that.

Play with this "simulator" called CameraSim (sorry I can not link due to rules).

Here is the settings under "manual" I have it set at to emulate the 50mm lens I listed above, mind you that I have no idea if this simulator is supposed to be a crop sensor or not, but probably not so this will likely look a little different on your camera, assuming its a crop sensor.

settings:

Distance: 3.5 ft
Focal Length: 50mm
Aperture: 2.8 (as low as this goes for some reason).

At these settings, its a fairly close up shot, and it may be even closer on your camera, but it's affordable, and doesn't distort the image noticeably.

At 30mm the framing seems a bit better but I believe in real life the image would be very distorted at this point, being so close to the camera.

You can't get in the shot with your 50mm at 3.5m away? I don't understand that. You should be just fine at that distance, and then the lower the f/stop you use, 1.8 in your case, the more pronounced the "bokeh" (aka the blurriness background effect) that you'll see. If the 50mm is too cropped at 3.5m, and not getting your whole shot in the scene, you should be able to switch to your 18-55mm and widen your shot until your scene is framed correctly, then make sure to lower the f/stop all the way (I believe it's f/3.5 on that lens?). You're not going to get as much bokeh as you would from your 50mm, but that seems to be your best option with those two lens. Just go to a camera website and look for a lens with a wide angle and a low f/stop. It's going to be quite a bit spendier than your current two lens though. Good luck.

the 18-55mm 18mm Fstop is indeed 3.5, very certain he wont get the blurred background. Unless he can maybe get the bed further away from the wall.

Honestly the shot in the OP is a QUALITY shot. I'd actually love to get the details of how they accomplished it. The perspective of the frame makes it seems as though there was NOT a wide angle, I would almost guess it kind of looks like a 80-100mm. Is there any possibility this is just a green screen?

Wow, if that's a green screen I'd sh*t my pants. That thought never occurred to me, but I don't think that's the case. I'm sure it's just a high quality L series lens producing a fantastic picture.

As far as 80-100mm? I highly doubt that. It's probably a 30mm shot max, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was 24mm or lower. It looks like she's sitting quite close to the camera.
