Can we talks about TAGS (the metadata kind)

Hi everyone!

Ok so I have tried my very best to research on how tags work, I don't get them.. at all! I get that you should tag relevant things about the video but what I don't understand is how to know what tags to use, which are the best? Are there generic ones? That probably makes me sound like a "noob" in the gaming world but I guess I am haha!

Hope someone can finally clear this dark cloud over me which is pouring down with the word 'TAGS' rather than normal raindrops..You get my point!

Thanks guys!

Oh my gosh! It's asking me to TAG this thread...I'M SO CONFUSED!

Hey Oliver Potter!

The fact that you ask this question right before I'm going to bed is outrageous. But I enjoy these kind of questions so lets get right into it.

  1. What are tags?
    • Tags identify your videos
      • Tutorial video about tags = How to use tags on YouTube, How to add tags on YouTube, Adding Tags on YouTube until you hit your max number of characters.
        • But make sure they are relevant to your video content!
  2. What tags should I use?
    • What is your video about?
      • Always add your channel name as your first tag so that you get your name and brand out there on search engines and youtube.
        • Did someone help you with your video? Tag them as well to get some more publicity from that channel as well. (Do not do this if the other person is not in the video or not about him)
  3. Do I need tags on my videos?
    • If you want to grow an audience in the beginning, you absolutely have to use tags in order for your audience to find you when they search for you or your video.

That's basically a really basic crash course to tags which will get you started. Then you can apply professional SEO research with the help of keyword planning etc but I feel that I would have to make a video on that.

TL;DR
Tag stuff that you want to teach or what you want people to search to find you. You tag: vlogging tutorial | They search: vlogging tutorial = tada they found you!
But there is also something called video ranks (basically what your video is ranked on different search results).

Alright hopefully I'm not too shabby at explaining I'm kind of tired and I'm from Sweden.

Ok, that has cleared a lot up for me! Thank you very much Kevin haha!

Just to add to Tomba's advice, use researched tags that are 2-6 words long that people will actually type on the search bar. 1-2 word tags are almost useless except if it's your channel name. But the secret to being found on search and rank high in SEO isn't really with tags. It's with proper descriptions that are 200-400 words long that include your researched tags.

Thanks for adding that, I almost fell asleep while writing the other part, so I didn't include all the other parts.

I have heard Tube Buddy helps with tags and helps you figure out the ranking of your tags. I have not used it yet, but I have researched a bit on it. I've had similar questions on tags as well feeling like what I was tagging wasn't doing anything for me.
