It sound like the elgato gameplay audio isn't recording. See when you plug your headphone in the ps4 sends audio to the headset and not the tv. On its own, the elgato record audio that is running trhough the tv. You will a bit more cables and tutorial to work around that issue.

That is unfortunate but what i don't understand is they would record the audio before i got a new headset but now it doesn't

Because the ps4 will be sending audio to headset device, and the elgato will receive no gameplay audio when the headset is plugged into the controller.
