Audience Retention?

Mine is at 40% lifetime, which is a little bit concerning for me, since my videos are fairly short. I can imagine that some of the earlier videos may be too long or too disinteresting for people to keep watching, and some of the longer ones may just have content that could be broken up into shorter videos. I'll have to experiment a little bit and really dig into my analytics to see what works and what doesn't.

Thanks for this thread! I didn't even think to look at this analysis before reading it!
No problem! I'm trying to do that too. I'm looking through my analytics to see what is working and what isnt. Before that, I was just looking at it for fun.[DOUBLEPOST=1447805718,1447805617][/DOUBLEPOST]
I try to target my videos for about a minute. The channel I run for an animal shelter originally hosted descriptive videos for the dogs who were up for adoption. Then it was dormant for a few years until I started working on it this summer. Now I am monetizing it to raise some money to help the place out. Anyways, I was surprised that the retention rate of about 65% was consistent through both "uses" of the channel.
65% is pretty good! And not a bad idea to earn a little bit of money to help the shelter out!

lifetime is at 49%. Which is ok considering my first video is wayyyy to long and mostly pretty boring for YouTube lol. Last 28 days is at 39%.

The thing is though, I do find myself trying to cut down my videos to around the 3-4 minute mark, however I was questioning to myself if this is the right attitude. I know that YouTube or success in growing anything worthwhile is a marathon and not a sprint. With this in mind is it worth it cutting down videos now at the start to try and get higher audience retention which would also mean leaving out good content, in my case information, stories etc.

I'm more in the frame of mind to make the videos as appealing as possible and put in the content you wanted. With time you will have a larger following and people will go back to watch those earlier videos in their entirety because they have grown to like you as a youtuber or what your channel is about.

For example one of my favourite youtuber Lavendaire. I always see her retweet stuff like 'Hey just found your channel and I love it so much, BINGE WATCHING ALL YOUR VIDEOS NOW'.'

Just another way i'm thinking of it at the moment.

It depends a lot on your video length but everything below 40% indicates that there is room for improvement. Check if people are dropping out at a specific time and try to avoid what you are doing there.

Will do! Thanks for the advice

Everybody has some great retention. I am still trying for double digits. I have been stuck at 3% for a long time...

I only glanced at your channel for a bit but I think the reason why is because your videos vary from like 20-60min long videos. Ours are usually just a few minutes. That might explain why its so small. If you want it to be higher maybe you should cut your videos a bit and highlight the best parts.

I would but unfortunately there really are no good parts.

I was actually really surprised to find my retention at 82% considering I've posted some longer series, but I believe this is mostly due to my latest let's play getting more attention.
