I am still kind of confused about the whole audience retention thing if you already have an audience like the Game Grumps or any other massive YouTube channel I don't think it matters...
Audience retention during a video is important because it's a measure of the quality of a video. If the audience retention is high that means that a lot of people found it interesting enough to watch the majority of the video. People who see a video that they considered interesting and worth their time are more likely to subscribe to a channel. Youtube give videos with higher audience retention a higher rating in their search results, which gives the channel more exposure and again the opportunity to gain more subscribers. If i remember correctly there is even a bonus if viewers stick around for the entire video and then continue viewing another video. You can sort of compare it to TV, if there is a program which most ppl stop watching after 30 seconds, it won't earn a lot of advertisement revenue. Nor will it give the channel in question a good name. I think you can be sure that professional youtubers are very interested in their audience retention.
