Audience Retention

I am still kind of confused about the whole audience retention thing if you already have an audience like the Game Grumps or any other massive YouTube channel I don't think it matters...

Audience retention during a video is important because it's a measure of the quality of a video. If the audience retention is high that means that a lot of people found it interesting enough to watch the majority of the video. People who see a video that they considered interesting and worth their time are more likely to subscribe to a channel. Youtube give videos with higher audience retention a higher rating in their search results, which gives the channel more exposure and again the opportunity to gain more subscribers. If i remember correctly there is even a bonus if viewers stick around for the entire video and then continue viewing another video. You can sort of compare it to TV, if there is a program which most ppl stop watching after 30 seconds, it won't earn a lot of advertisement revenue. Nor will it give the channel in question a good name. I think you can be sure that professional youtubers are very interested in their audience retention.

Yeah I just meant they have such a good following that if they put out like a 1-2 hour video they still have people watch to the very end but yeah thanks for clearing it up for me :D

How exactly does the retention statistics work? Is the % the percentage of views who watched the whole thing? Or is it the average amount of the video people are watching?

All my videos have a distinct cut from where I am on camera. Whenever I am in the beginning everyone seems to start video right where I am off screen and the footage is playing. Once I am back on screen people drop off again. I had no clue I have this type of impact on audiences. I am like a the leper of youtube lol.
