My friend dutch recently made me a animated intro that I plan on using but it sparked my interest. Could anyone point me in the direction of some good software cheap/free for me to start out with?

Well, you can use Blender to create and animate 3D scenes. Flash (which is paid) is good for 2D, of course. You could try something with Pencil, or perhaps that Flash alternative Vectorian Giotto. I don't do animations much, but the last one I did I did in GIMP (for the drawing) and Blender (for the movement, animations, and syncing to sound).
