About those suggestions for upload schedules...

Sabrina

I'm going outside now.
I keep reading that gamers should upload daily, vloggers 2-3 times a week, comedians once a week, etc.... (correct me if I'm wrong)

I get that uploading regularly and sticking to a schedule increases viewership, but who came up with those "rules"? I don't watch gaming videos so I'm baffled why it is recommended for gamers to upload daily (considering the videos are also pretty long, aren't they?). Do subscribers really watch every video every day?

Personally I've found that I can get tired of a person really quickly if they upload too often and their face is everywhere, which is a shame. Also, I'd prefer 1 really good video a week instead of 3 mediocre ones (recent example: Emma Blackery increased her uploads and I'm less interested in her newer videos and get a bit tired of her.)

I guess for me, ideally someone should upload every 5 days - but that's an odd number and you can't say "New video every ...." which is also really important!

I'm interested in reading your opinions/preferences!

I mean depending on the time of game videos you upload. If you do Let's Plays and such you practically need to upload daily or you'll fall way behind others -- I''m not about to watch you play, "The Last of Us" once a week for thirty minutes when there are 10000x other people uploading it daily.
If the videos are not of ridiculous high standards to be posting weekly, you're progression on Youtube will be slow as a rock. If you don't do Let's plays, and just like indie single-vids or mini-games you can probably get away with 3 videos a week.

If you do things like top 10, or game theories, they make more since being weekly and those are okay. But I would have to say Let's Plays a no no!
My opinion of course. But really how do some people plan to compete in Let's Plays and content if you're weeks behind everybody else? It's easy to lose a gamer attention span due to how much content of it is on the internet. You got to stay relevant to your viewer.

At the end of the day it`s up to the person behind the youtube channel when they upload a video. For gaming videos some can take a very short amount of time to make such as a let`s play video. Other videos such as reviews take a lot more time, parts from all the game needs to recorded, a rough script outline and research on the game. Then there is putting the whole thing together which is the longest part.

Honestly I just prefer to upload with what works for me, but I do like to make uploads for example at least once a month but I intend to do more that that. I prefer to set my our guide on the maximum and minimum upload rate but that`s just me :)

I'd never encountered any rules like the ones you've described and can't say anything on behalf of gamers.
Regular uploading is very important I know and for me, regardless of content, I find a video a week to be perfect from both a creator and viewer perspective.
Balancing school and YouTube means one per week works for me but mightn't for others. Daily uploads probably need to be a variety of content.

It depends on the content creator for me.
Some people I can only enjoy watching from now and then, but some other people I might enjoy to watch on a daily basis.

I mainly watch gaming videos, and something I love is if I have missed like almost an entire playthrough of a game and then just binge watch the series until I reach the current episode. This only satisfies me if they are made by someone I really enjoy watching, though.

I prefer if people only upload 1 time a day or 3-5 videos a week or something. Several videos a day would be tough to keep up with. (Unless they are a gaming news channel, then they are allowed to upload more)

I've always been told regular uploading is important, although every day seems a bit excessive, but i can't say i've see a massive change in views/subs since i started uploading regular.

I am exactly like you SabrinaKom. At some point, enough already! In fact, as much as I adore (for example) Tyler Oakley, I don't subscribe to his second channel or any other big YouTuber's daily channel. I like looking forward to each video and knowing that tie and effort was put into it.

I watch some people who do daily uploads, but I really like them (I really like anyone I'm subscribed to XD). I find it better for those people because it really doesn't take that long to make daily LP videos, and they are really fun for me to watch. For my LP videos, I only upload 3 per week because of school, but I also do a weekly informational/top 5 video on Fridays. When I did try daily uploads a while ago, it didn't work out, so I lessened my schedule to 3 per week which has been going very well. In the case of other types of videos, I think your estimates were good because comedy videos probably take the longest out of any type of video, and vlogs probably take a long time to edit together.

I'd just say upload a QUALITY video as often as you can. If it takes you 3 days to make a good gaming video (with good commentary, editing, effects, etc) then only upload every 3 days. Don't crank out mediocre videos just for the sake of uploading, since people are going to watch them and think they suck. That being said, I think the minimum you should be uploading is once a week. After a week people will start forgetting about you. There are exceptions, such as if you make extremely high quality and time consuming videos like some animators that may spend months making new videos. If it's literally impossible to upload weekly, then just upload whenever you can. But for most people, a week is plenty of time to make a new video, even multiple videos.

Gamers are a different breed of audience, they do make up most of YouTube's entire viewer base (mainly because gaming is a normal hobby now days), most of them aren't as out going and spend more time at the PC than any other average person so they usually have more time on their hands. This can lead to a higher demand for daily content in part due to a title that might be played. E.g. If I wanted to watch a Let's Play of The Walking Dead Season 3, I want to be able to watch as much of it as possible, if it's once a week I'd forget what was going on because it's a continous thing. If you wait too long people are going to go elsewhere to watch it. I also like to watch a different person each day if I can too.

Vlogs aren't normally continous, it's usually a different topic each time so waiting a week or more for 1 isn't usually an issue. A TV Show works because they usually have that recap at the start and episodes are designed to be as watchable & entertaining as possible to potentially new viewers even if they catch an episode mid season. Games don't work that way, with the acception of Telltale's The Walking Dead since it has episodes but each episode is about 2hrs long on average, games like The Last of Us on the other hand don't section off too well, it could be 10mins up to 1hr before you finish a section/area so this results in cuts in areas that would otherwise be abnormal in a TV shows or vlog or animation etc... Like you wouldn't have a TV show where the episodes are normally 30mins long then all of a sudden 1 episode is cut down to 10mins and the next is 20. These "rules" come about from general observation.

That being said if you're doing random gaming videos like montages, animation style 1s, highlights etc... you don't need to do it daily. But if doing things like Let's Plays you want to try to keep it daily or at least a few a week. I on the other hand mix things up if I can, I have GTA 5 videos once a week now but I make each video specific to 1 mission so it's sectioned off well meaning that you don't have to crave the next to know what's going to happen, I have mixed in AC Freedom Cry and South Park which are mon-thur on random days soon to be adding GTA Online (again) sat-sun I don't release videos at all, I leave them as catch up days. I've generally given up caring about whether I have a series daily because I'm too small to get views anyways and if someone wants to watch it elsewhere they can.

TL;DR gamers are a different breed of audience, require different schedules to keep them watching, games are continous for the duration of the game itself thus = higher demand for daily content.
