1 year and a half - Only 1600 subscribers.

I've almost hit a year and I only have 28... I'd say you're doing fantastic! And as to speaking in video, my first ever video I was super nervous and got caught up and tongue twisted in regular/simple words. The more you do it, the more natural it feels to you! Stick with it and you've got it :)

A blog will help search engine optimize your videos. We haven't set one up for us yet (we're waiting until we have a large enough back catalogue of content to post regularly), but when you post on a blog and have a website with all of your video information and stuff on it, you'll show up in more searches, more related videos, and you will also be able to reach people through a new medium other than YouTube. People chilling on Wordpress, sifting through hashtags would have the opportunity to stumble upon and watch your stuff.
