Do you think that if you charged $1/month for premium content videos on your channel, that your subscribers would be willing to pay?

I'm asking because I've heard a lot about a service called Patreon. However, I'm not sure that depending on donations is the best way to try to make a living from my Youtube content.

They most likely wouldn't, but with Patreon, they have the choice to pay a monthly fee, but that is to improve your content.
 
If you get a lot of views, you'll make a lot of $$ on Adsense. I'd focus on that. YouTubers love YouTube because it's free. If you're not pulling in enough views for "free", I'm not sure how you can get many people to actually pay to watch your content. I don't mean that to you personally, I don't know your channel, but conceptually.

Hardly anyone would. Pay-to-view would kill practically all channels.
 
Patreon works best when you already receive a ton of messages from viewers asking if they can donate in some way. Asking for a $1 donation per month isn't really cost effective due to the fees. The 30 cents plus 2.1% credit card processing fee, means you incur fees of 32 cents for a $1 donation-so you're forking over a third of the money when asking for $1 donations. The fees obviously go down when get donations in larger amounts-but you need to encourage that by giving greater rewards. Simply offering premium material isn't enough-and it will probably p**s off your existing fanbase.
 
It works only if you have a big audience and they are already donating to you. I know some Youtubers use Patreon and give some extra content for those who donate.
