im not sure what to name this thread. i guess someting about seo and copyrighted music.

SOCKS

The cool kids around the block
Okay, so recently, I've been working on my SEO skill (I got one of our covers to show up on the first page:)) and when I made a search for one of my videos to see its ranking, it wasn't on the first page, 2nd page, 3rd, 4th, 5th, basically, it wasn't there. This also happened with another one of our covers. But what I realized was that both of these videos were accused of containing copyrighted music (we didn't use copyrighted music, its just that some parts of our cover sound so similar to the original). But idk if these two observations are related. Does having a copyright strike effect the videos search engine ranking? Or am I just trippin?

I accept my new role as of ruler of the copyright and claims section!
I don't know about that but I do know that technically covers aren't allowed. It doesn't matter about them thinking it's the original or not, covers themselves aren't protected as ok to do. For some reason most people just get away with doing them, I guess cause the little sensors don't realize it's a cover or something.

As far as the other part I really don't know.

If you make cover of a song the original copy rights owner still keeps full copy rights over it (even if it is just vocals). Is your channel monetized? There are songs/covers which are not allowed on YouTube and others which are allowed but you must share revenue with the original copy rights owner.
But Yes ID matches and especially strikes will decrease the "visibility" of your channel on YouTube. Do You have an ID match or strike?

Wow that's crazy. Our channel isn't monetized yet but we plan on doing that in the future. idk about there being a strike, but there are matches on 2 of our covers, and it gave me the option to dispute their claim, which I did. Is it still gonna have an effect on my channel? And is there a way to know which covers are allowed?

Oh crap man, I wouldn't dispute it dude! Like covers on youtube is kinda just like... you take the risk you know? Usually you'll get away with it, it's how some people wind up successful but you just... you gotta understand that if they tell you to take the vid down or whatever you just gotta deal with it and accept the consequences. It sucks but it's just how it is.

Oh, well shoot! I just figure, well I created the instrumentals and the arrangement, so I own the right to the song. I didn't know that didn't matter. Our channel isn't monetized yet so I'm assuming they won't ask us to take them down now, right?

Probably not, I mean covering songs is so common and so easy to get away with that even professional youtubers and youtube consultants suggest musicians do it to get their name out there, some covers go viral and never even get flagged! That's why I said "technically" it's against the TOS. It's done all the time, it's rarely picked up on or made into a problem, but if you DO get flagged, I'd suggest... hmmm I'd either suggest taking down the one that got flagged or just acknowledging the claim.

But it's not something you can fight like, you don't have the legal high ground you just gotta be like "welp, that cover got found out, hope the next one slips through the cracks"

Do not dispute legitimate claims on cover songs! It only shows to YouTube staff that you do not understand the basics of copy rights concerning music and is one of the best ways to get your channel terminated in the future.
Please read this:

sorry I can not post the URL - just go to Google and type:
youtube help cover songs monetization

(the first result should be OK)

Most of the big music studios have signed contract with YouTube (Universal, Emmy, Sony) so their songs should be OK for revenue sharing but there is not complete list with the songs (as far as I know).

Please be very careful with ID matches and copy rights issues especially if you want to make some revenue of your channel in the future. If you have a strike you will not be able to monetize your channel.
