Copyright concerning fanfictions?

I'm thinking of reading fanfictions on my channel in the future. Of course I'll ask for the permission of the person who wrote the fanfiction, but where does the copyright stand on the original work? Are fanfictions considered separate enough to be considered apart from the original work copyright wise?

As long as you get the permission of the person who wrote it, you should be ok. One could do a review of a tv show/movie/game with multiple clips from the source content shown without any copyright problems, so I highly doubt this would cause an issue.
