What is a Good External Mic?

Hey there, since it Christmas is coming up as we all know, I might be getting a new camera and it had an external mic input, so with the Christmas money I get I would most likely buy an external mic.

So here's my question, what is a good decent mic that is cheep. Preferably a shotgun mic that can be mounted onto a cold/hot shoe of a camera (I can't remember which the one the mic goes on). One that picks up sound clearly, you know any good ones?
