Yeah I've heard good things about OBS (https://obsproject.com/) as @NIP mentioned.

I think it's mainly made for streaming, but the recorder part should be pretty good also. Darn, maybe I should check it out one of these days

OBS uses x264 encoding afaik so it's CPU load should be pretty low, like @NIP and @MrThomsen said it's free, so it's worth the check out.
