Using a capture card to record a DSLR?

Canon dslrs can only record for a certain amount of time to record before the video stops. But using a capture card with connecting an hdmi cord to your dslr to the capture card; it would grant you to capture what your camera sees. My question is: Since I don't think I would invest in buying a webcam, is it worth getting a capture card to record my dslr as I do let's plays? What do you guys think

Offboard recorders are extremely handy as they often bypass your camera's compression and, depending on the camera, can record raw footage. I've the Atomos Ninja 2 series before and love them. Touch screen input, battery powered, instant replay and monitoring. Great. I use it for professional shots though. So I'm not sure if it may be overkill for your set up. Get it at a bargain and you'll be laughing.
