so I'm in the process of writing a short book about writing poetry, and I think large parts of it applies to writing scripts as well.
I wanted, first of all to know if it makes any sense at all and people are able to follow what I'm trying to say, thus the poll
and I think it'd be magnificent if we could create a thread where people share writing prompts and results from those prompts
creativity is about taking ideas and combining them
how you combine those ideas is up to you
one of my favourite I adapted from an idea by Ze Frank
it's the “that makes me think of” game
you just start with an idea and go say “that makes me think of”
write a word as a topic
then branching out from that word write a the few first things it made you think of
then from those branches create more branches, of things those things made you think of
keep doing this until words that feel important start coming
write those on the side
first you'll find a few important words
then interesting phrases
then good lines
then a whole script has appeared from the original idea
for example: Steampunk Pegasus remade the world
This was a poem that started with a writing prompt of steampunk and pagasus
pegasus made me think of ancient Greece
and gods of Olympia
and steam punk made me think of lots of things
like top hats and coursets and gears and cogs
and re-making things in steampunky fashion
so I got the line “Steampunk Pagasus remade the world”
and the rest of the poem came using the other ideas I'd written down
you might know this concept as mind-mapping
it's a concept most schools try to teach in the most boring way possible
it actually leads to some awesome ideas and is a magnificent tool to un-stick yourself
give yourself five minutes
don't stop mind-mapping until either you've started writing a script, or your five minutes is up.
if you want to give it a go, my first prompts are: chocolate, timelords, and Charlie McDonnell[DOUBLEPOST=1388379275,1388378064][/DOUBLEPOST]I ran a mind map of my own on the topics and the I got was "the witch that made the British attractive also made chocolate"
which makes me think of a board meeting of people with suits trying to negotiate with the witch and her being all "NO! Benedict Cumberbatch shall be the next attractive thing"
and then the men in suits being like all "but his name sounds like a Roald Dahl character"
and another being like all "looks like one too"
and the witch being like all "I like Roald Dahl... also people are going to go mad for chipotle."
