Non-Skippable Video Ads Good for All Channels?

Harpuia

That "creepy" guy that makes Youtube videos.
So I've been of the belief that I won't even touch non-skippable video ads until I break at least comfortably above 10k subscribers (if that ever happens), but I've been reading up recent tips on Youtube saying that the sooner the better.

I'm confused though, because Youtube says that you will likely have a high abandonment rate, and some fans would not like a smaller channel like mine trying to do something like that already from the get go.

I'm just wondering what everyone's stance here is on non-skippable video ads, if it should be done as a small channel (under 10k subs) or not?

I would avoid it until you know you're going to make a decent profit off of it. I can tell you that myself, and quite a lot other people I know tend to click out of videos with non-skippable ads (or some just use adblock because of it). It depends on what you want to do, but it does more harm than anything for smaller channels.

I enabled all of them ads like 3 months in my YouTube lifetime(300 subs-ish). It was an experiment and I never went back to no ads because I don't see any significant losses. I'm still growing even after enabling them and there was no obvious loss in retention.

I do believe what they say about putting ads earlier is probably to not let people have the impression that you have changed and only wanted money when you get big. Because some people get put off at the fact that the ads are suddenly enabled after a long period of no ads. So if its from the start, the people just get used to it.

That's just my point of view tho.

I resisted using non-skippable ads for the longest time because I thought it would negatively impact my view counts, so at first I experimented and switched over a handful of my top video view-getters to see what would happen. It didn't impact views in any significant way, but it sure helped my earnings increase. Now I enable non-skippable ads after a video has hit a certain view amount.

They're generally fine to enable, and I haven't noticed a significant earnings increase or viewer drop after enabling them. YouTube doesn't show them all the time, and the most common non skippable ads are the 10 - 15 second ones which are quite tolerable for viewers.
