Niche Or Not?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone could give some advice regarding this whole niche thing...

So here are my circumstances, and why I'm in two minds about it;

I've recently decided that I'm going to scrub an old channel I've been working on for two years or so. It wasn't growing and I know a lot of that was down to me and my own misjudgements. I changed the channel's name about 4 or 5 times in this period and I wasn't very focused on what I was doing. Some videos were of a good quality and others were admittedly dreadful. Also my content was a bit... random, sometimes.

I think another reason for my last channel's lack of growth was that I stopped posting regularly about 10 months ago because my son was born, and that, for obvious reasons, has cast a downer on the old channel's performance since.

The thing is though, as I sit here trying to formulate some kind of plan for this new project I actually hate the idea of having a niche. My primary purpose for making videos is to have fun, not to see it as a second job I'm not being paid to do. Now whilst I know the main topics that I'll be covering fit together reasonably well (hiking, camping, survival, wildlife and ecology) I'm also very interested in history, folklore, as well as aviation and local events like Steam Galas', (old steam train displays) etc.

In addition to all this though, I do have a bit of a secondary objective which is selling books. I'm in the process and have been for a while (albeit slowly) of writing about local history and I'd like to get them publish ed one day. Having a half-decent number of subscribers would at least make it more likely of being published and or selling to people with similar interests.

So... would you go with an emphasis on the mish-mash of local history, wildlife and hiking which to be honest sounds like it does mix reasonably well, or perhaps present all of this eclectic material as more of a vlog, incorporating basically anything I'm doing that week or month as part of the content? If I were already famous the vlog thing seems to work, but seeing as I'm starting from zero with little to no online support from any community, I feel the vlogger option sounds unfeasible.

What do you good folk think?

Youtube aside, publishing wise have you considered putting your work on amazon KDP? (kindle Books)

Quite easy to publish and makes it easy to advertise with an actual sales link on youtube videos

I think you should create what YOU want to create. Everyone wants to grow a channel, and some people create content and force it out just to stay active and relevant. It is something that is rewarded by YouTube because active channels will grow faster than those that don't upload consistently. I do not upload consistently at all (you'll get 2 videos with me a month, sometimes I'll throw in a vlog or something extra, but most of the time it's just two). I create because I want to create. If I don't want to create I take a step back and chill for a bit. I never looked back.

The funny thing? I gain the same views and the same subscribers as when I was pumping out content. Slowing down also means I am more critical in the editing stage. So I think overall the content I produce is higher quality. I can tell you one thing: I would not be able to keep that quality up if I had to produce 3 videos a week. No way.

I haven't thought that far ahead to be honest, I imagined physical copies would suit the more travel related content but we'll see. I know that there a few options, Lulu looked ok from what I could tell but I'll have to sit down nearer the time and work it all out.[DOUBLEPOST=1538327214,1538326919][/DOUBLEPOST]

I appreciate this. When you look at a lot of channels a lot of it looks very faux, I don't know anyone who would have the energy to produce content, particularly similar or samey content, on a regular basis and not burn out. I know I would if I tried. I get the quality aspect too, whenever I made videos because I felt I had to it was usually of a shockingly bad quality.

In my opinion I will go with "mish-mash of local history, wildlife and hiking" it will make your dream of selling your books later on much more easier
