Lighting: Softbox vs. Umbrella

Both is diffusing light, you just need to find what kind of diffusion you want. Softbox gives you a nice, smooth light while Umbrella give a harsher light, but not as harsh as you would have if you just pointed a lightbulb at the subject.

For vlogs, I would go softbox. But it really depends on your needs. Give us more information about what you are going to be using it for and we may be able to tailor advice to your needs :)

Vlogs mainly! The lighting in my room is yellowish and looks horrible on camera so I want to try create a natural lighting set up within a pretty small scene. Also a more adjustable set up would be awesome, for example it works for just sitting down and talking but also for standing a moving around in a limited space. I don't know much about lighting so any help is awesome! :)

What you need to look into is the 3 point interview set up.

Usually what vloggers do is set up beside a window at a time of day where a diffused light is coming through the window. They then use either a reflector or LED light to then fill in the shadows.

A good example of this is a friend of mine: juliaisaglobetrotter

Here is one of her videos:

In this video, you see she has got quite a nice lighting set up. This is done using light from her room light as the Key light, her christmas lights to add a bit of interest in the background and then the window as the fill light. With this, she was able to create the lighting set up she has :)

Awesome! That's really helpful. Thank you so much! My room never gets light into due to the huge trees outside! I've searched amazon for soft boxes and there's some there for around 80 to 100 pounds, are they worth investing in or is there a better solution?
