Help Uploading an Avatar on You Tube

Newbie here, I uploaded a video on You Tube, created a channel and profile and when I view my video the white head on a blue background appears! So I go back to edit my profile, it takes me to Google, I finally get my picture loaded after an hour of pain, but its not on YouTube..its on Google. This is more than frustrating! This is putting murder in my heart!

It was easy to load an avatar here, what am I missing trying to do this on YouTube?
I want to do put my cartoon face on YouTube (just like the one on the left of this post.)

Thanks in advance for a step by step...unless there is already one on the forum and you can link me to it.
 
Update! I did see something about "Thumbnails" next to your video, but you have to be a member over 30 days in good standing. Could this be the problem I'm having getting the avatar next to my name on an uploaded video? If it is, why can't they just explain that when you upload your first video? How hard is it?
